Subject: PR Status - What documents do I get
  Hi all,

Plese help me with some info. I´ve been granted PR (Permanent Residence) but I´m unsure about the documents I´ll be getting. I was given a certificate & a Canadian visa in my UK passport. My questions are :-

1. What happens when I land? Will I be called aside for an immigration interview at the airport, and then a PR Card arranged for me to reach me in 2 weeks?

2. My understanding was the PR is valid for 5 years. However, the date the PR extends to in the certificates and visa (in passport) is the date my UK passport expires (Oct 2011)

Does this mean
(2a) I am being given PR for 5 years, & the PR Card will correctly show 5 years?

(2b) Or does it mean that as soon as my UK passport expires, I have to request Canada Immigration to extend my PR? If so, which form do I use?

3. What is the implication of the PR status expiring 9as in 2b above), esepcially since I plan to apply for citizenship in 2012.

Say my PR status has run out as in (2b) above because my UK passport has expired. If I do not renew my PR status, then :

(i) will there be a problem when I apply for citizenship?
(ii) can I stay on in Canada after PR ends on expiry of passport? I know that Australia allows people to stay on, but there is a problem of re-entry if the travel outside Aus.

Thanks in advance

Once you approach CBSA at the airport you will have to go for an interview. As long as nothing has changed in your status you should be fine (didn´t recently commit murder etc...).
You then become a landed immigrant, or Permanent Resident of Canada.
This does not just go away in five years.
It is your card that is valid for five years (like a drivers license).
You must meet your residency obligations however, which is spending atleast 730 days of each five year period in Canada.

For your card you will need to have an address in Canada when you land. You also must not be leaving the country by air in the following months (2 usually).

If your passport expires that is not an issue.
You may want to go to your countries embassy in Canada to extend your passport, but you will not need it unless you are planning on travelling.

The reason your visa is until a certain day just allows you to land up until midnight on the date of expiry. This is just for your trip to Canada to become a PR.

To answer your many a/b/c type questions I have one blanket answer.
As a PR you are ALLOWED to stay in Canada for LIFE.
You have a right to Enter Canada and the only other paperwork you will need to do regarding your status is if you decide to become a citizen.

Hope that helped
