Subject: Permanent Resident Status & Leaving Canada
I am a Canadian citizen living in the UK and my husband has just received his Permanent Resident Visa - he has to be in the country by the end of April. However, it is most unlikely we will have been able to sell our house and settle our affairs by this time. Is it possible for my husband and I to go to Canada for a couple of weeks in order to invoke his PR visa and then return to the UK for a couple of months to settle our affairs? What will my husband´s situation be if he enters Canada with a return ticket? Will he have to stay in Canada until he has his PR card before he can return to the UK and does he have to apply for permission to do so?

Sure he can just enter Canada and then go back.. jsut make sure that when he comes to Canada he applys for his SIN, and Health Card, PR Card and all the other things he needs.

If he leaves Canada without getting his PR card then when he has to return he will need to get the travel document from the Canadian Consulate. I think that costs $55.

BUt yeah These days I have heard that the PR card comes within 2-3 weeks... so just take a holiday and get here and once all is done you are all good to go...

Another thing, For keeping a legal PR status you have to stay a minimum 3 Yrs out of 5 Yrs in Canada. This is a must to keep the PR valid.

Canadian Citizen living in US sponsoring Dutch husband (in reply to: Permanent Resident Status & Leaving Canada)
Hi,
I hope someome can help me out. I recently sent in all my documents to CIC and heard back about a month later (online) that the decision has been made. What does this mean? I am awaiting a letter.

I have lived in the US since March 2001 and hope that I have not violated my Canadian residency stauts. I am a bit anxious to know what decision could be made this quickly. Is there anyone out there in the same boat?

Thanks,
Kem

Its my understanding that PRs must live in Canada for 2 years out of every 5. They can remain outside of Canada for up to 3 years.
