Subject: requirements for keeping PR valid
  Hi everyone!

great forum with lots of very useful information. Would greatly appreciate if someone could kindly answer the following questions for me ..

1)How many years out of 5 does one have to stay in Canada to keep the PR card valid ? is it 2 years in every 5 years or 3 years in every 5 years?

2)If due to the above requirement one looses their permanent residentship, then will the whole process be easier/shorter for them if they apply again for a new PR card?

thanks very much for your help!

Sac

Keeping PR valid (in reply to: requirements for keeping PR valid)
You must live in Canada for 2 years out of every 5 years. You can stay away for 3 years at any one time - but then you MUST live in Canada for the next 2 years before you can leave again.

And no if you stay away too long, you will lose your PR status. You will not be able to apply for a new PR card - you will have to pay the fees and reapply for PR status all over again.
