Subject: Conflicting Re-entry information on Work Permit
I am a US citizen that visits Canada 5 or 6 times a year for work lasting 3 or 4 days each visit.

A few months ago at the Toronto Airport,I got a Work Permit for a specific work site, expiring in the year 2012.

However, I noticed that the Permit says "Remarks: MULTIPLE ENTRIES AUTHORIZED" but then in larger font at the bottom of the permit it says "THIS DOES NOT AUTHORIZE RE-ENTRY".

I am planing to enter Canada from the US next month for another business trip to the same authorized work site. Will I be able to cross the border with this or do I need additional paperwork?

The info are contradicting. Call the immigration general number for inquiry or go to the closest immigration office, preferrably Toronto Airport (port of entry).

No, there is no contradiction.

This is the deal:
A Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident HAS the right to enter Canada.

YOU in the other hand, may enter the country but technically you have NO right to enter. That being said, it means that your entry is up to the immigration officer at the port of entry.
If you are coming to work here and you have a valid work permit and you haven´t been charged with any criminal offence down there and you satisfy the officer that you are going to leave at the end of the project /permit most likely you won´t have any issues re-entering Canada at all.

In the other hand, let´s say just for the sake of it that you are charged with DUI and then you attempt to cross the border, well, the Canadian border officer won´t let you in and then when you try to argue about it, guess what? your permit says "THIS DOES NOT AUTHORIZE RE-ENTRY". They told you so.

Work permits, visitor´s records will always say "This does not authorize re-entry" all what it means is that is not an automatic permit to re-enter the country.

Cheers,

Bill
