Can I work while waiting for Residency

Subject: Can I work while waiting for Residency
Hi, my question is twofold. I am a South African and my girlfriend is Canadian, from Ottawa.

We are planning for me to join her in Canada, though we are not yet married, and so firstly, does being married help that much, does it greatly enhance my chances and make things easier for me to get my Canadian permanent residence etc?

Secondly, I have read a number of posts, suggesting that spouses come over on a Visitor visa, and then be sponsored inland. My worry is that for this period, anywhere from six months to a year I suppose, I am unable legally to work. Do I have further options, can I await residency while on a temporary working visa?

Thank you
very much

you can apply for a work permit once you get AIP ( approval in principle ) and that takes about 6 months.

Thanks, any thought on how long that would take? In total how long would I be in a non-working capacity, and is it possible to do this from out of the country, say work somewhere else while I´m waiting for all the paperwork to go through?

Thanks

So you arrive at the airport and your asked. "What is your purpose for coming to Canada today".

I´ve come to live permanently with my girlfriend!

You´re on the next plane home.

OR

You get admitted and you Marry your girlfriend and submit an In Canada Spousal Sponsorship. Six months later your file is transferred to the local office. Two years later your called for a marriage interview because your application was not convincing enough. You can´t go anywhere for a Vacation other then in Canada and you have to wait for two years even if there is a death in your family.

Come visit marry and submit outside of Canada far faster and way more safer!

Wow Roy,

Thanks a lot for that reply. I must say I was very surprised to read that. Everything else I´ve read seemed to indicate that submitting outside of Canada was a terrible option, and one that would take ages.

Um, yeah, so would I stay in my home country then, while I waited for the documents to come through?

Thanks for your help, really appreciate the clear answers.

Well............. You are visiting (wink) and in theory should be admitted for six months unless you say something silly at the airport.

CBSA (Immigration) will want to know what your coming to see so a dog sled trip somewhere for a day or two would be ideal or anything way up north or even the Olympics with your friend who has the tickets etc. (google away)

One thing if you remain in Canada for more then six months you will need to provide Proof of NO Convictions.

TY for your response but all you have to do is look at the processing times for SA 4-6 months to complete half of the applications plus one month for Mississauga CPC to approve your sponsor. in theory your application could be approved + U landed within five months.

I suggest you get your Police Clearances and do your medical before arriving in Canada. Get married, Honeymoon and take lots of relationship type photos of the two of you having fun together. Respecting one another and laughing together about what the two of you consider funny.

If your communicating by web cam take photos of the two of you communicating and therefore less reliance on snail mail and actual phone bills showing frequency and duration of calls. Some from your side and some from her side is ideal.

Communicating for free and seeing each other at the same time is the best way to communicate anyways.

Remember compassion is common sense!

Roy,

again, thank you so very much. That´s awesome. I´m sure there are a few things I´ve forgotten to ask, but this gives us a lot to discuss.

Cheers
Harry
