Subject: Car Modifications
  Hi All,
In importing a U.S. car to Canada, the required modification used to be just daytime running lights. It now looks like it also includes child restraint anchors or something along those lines.

Can anyone confirm this? Anyone know the cost estimate? Is it still something Canadian Tire does?

(By the way, I never saw much value to having to have headlights on all day, and seemed like a waste of energy. Maybe statistics prove me wrong.)

Hey Richard,
If you´ve new car then bring it otherwise, try to sell in U.S. I brought a car from U.S and it was given me a hard time. Finally, I donated to Kidney foundation in Canada.
Thanks

Hey Richard:

Yes, Canadian Tire does both. We didn´t have to get anchors in one of our cars and our other car already had them, so it might depend on what type of seatbelts your car has in the backseat. Are they over the shoulder, and do they lock? That might be requirement enough, but anchors are no big deal if they do need to be installed.

I am a big fan of daylight running lights, and wish that full lights had to be on all the time. Even if you don´t care for them, consider that most of the country is rural and has unpredictable weather so lights are one less thing to have to think about on small roads and driving rain/sleet/fog. I keep mine on full all the time, and it really helps for visibility.

As long as your car is on the riv list, I highly recommend you bring it with you. The cost of a new car up here (like everything else)is atrocious, making the $200 or so that Canadian Tire will charge you seem like mere change.

Does this question mean you are getting closer?

Thanks guys for the good suggestions and information. I know they´ll darn well make sure any imported car is within standards before they´ll issue registration. Else possible hard time as rules are strictly observed.

You make a good point, wannabe. With so many miles of isolation between towns, it probably is safer up there to keep headlights on at all times. I´m curious if Europe is the same way with the same requirement. I´m also glad to hear that installing anchors is not a big deal. This for a ´90 Camry (that seems to run forever), so probably would need it.

You´re absolutely right about the incredible prices up there (everything, including cars). Stopped by a few Toyota dealers there and calculated at least 20-30% higher margin (if not more) on the exact same models as down here. And that´s not counting the 15% vs. 8% tax differential on top of that. But before I get knocked around for that observation from the Canadians, I know that social things like universal health care have to be paid for in some way.

And finally yes to the last. Will catch up with you a bit more on that. Any reverse direction activities with you?
