Subject: No longer possible to sponsor spouse?
  Hello,

My girlfriend and I were going to get married so she could sponsor me. We contacted the Canadian embassy in Sweden to get a non-impediment certificate and we were told that you can no longer sponsor your spouse and if we are getting married just to sponsor they will not give us the certificate.

This is exactly what they told us, "Too many abused the spouse sponsoring in the beginning of 2000 so it´s no longer possible to apply for it, so if you are only getting married to abuse the immigration laws we can´t approve the non-impediment certificate.".

We are both well educated with no criminal records and I got a lot of money saved up to cover all the expenses for the next year to come. She immigrated from China at the age of 6 but she´s now a citizen so that shouldn´t be an issue.

Is what they are telling us true or are they lying to us? We had planned this for over 6 months and we have no idea what to do now. We would really appreciate some advice on how to continue.

either you did not ask the right question, they did not hear the question correctly, or there is extenuating circumstances you are not telling us.

Spousal sponsorship is alive and well for PR´s residing in Canada or Citizens that intend to return to Canada with their spouses.

There is no fiance class. Sponsorship takes about a year to complete. If you qualify (see CIC website - family class) make sure you take the Outland route.

I did ask the right question and he did understand me. The man I talked to sounded very angry and rude from the very beginning. It was a small Canadian consulate since that´s where the embassy directed me. I´ll try to contact the embassy again and discuss it with them.
I´ve read through the requirements and we do qualify for spousal sponsorship. We have been engaged for over a year now so it would be strange if they´d think we´re faking our marriage just so I can immigrate.

......answer is in your question itself. (in reply to: No longer possible to sponsor spouse?)
I think the answer is in your question itself.
The problem is here: "My girlfriend and I were going to
get married so she could sponsor me"
I understand you don´t mean that otherwise. Getting married and sponsoring your spouse is one thing; and getting married for sponsorship is another thing.
Don´t worry...For real marriages and geniune spouses; the sponsorship is open, and will be open always.
You don´t have to call the consulate for sponsorship.
Just download the forms, get your document filled; attach required documents (enough proof, marriage certificates, photos,CRA form c, employment etc etc. )and pay the fees and then; do what ever you are doing now, until you receive the letter from CIC.
Sponsorship to be done from Canada, your spouse can´t sponsor you from your country.
It takes min 85 days to one year depending the area and case.
