Sharon: You make an excellent point about taking Vitamin D in the wintertime. I am generally not too affected by the gray days (cloudy, cold and snowy in winter/foggy, cold and rainy in the summer) but I did start taking Vitamin D last year after reading that at this latitude, humans gain enough D naturally from the sunshine only 2 months out of the year--June and July. Vancouver, of course, is much farther north even than where we are, though your springtimes are probably more agreeable for baring skin and soaking up the rays.

I wonder how most immigrants deal with wintertime, wherever they end up in Canada, especially if they are from warmer climates. We learned many years ago when we lived in Minnesota that the best way to handle extreme cold and snow is to simply embrace it--get out there and ski, snowshoe, play, and not hole up in dread.

Anyone else want to share how you deal with winter?

I am quite surprised that it would make such a difference. My sleep is better, and I feel more alert during the day and I don´t feel like I am dragging by 4pm. I take the suppliment in the morning (not sure if time of taking it makes a difference or not).

I never paid it much mind until my friend was here from Africa in February and was really affected by the lack of clear day/night and sun. I have grown up here so I never thought much of it until now.

Couldn´t agree more with you guys. Vitamin D is turning out to be a key to good health, especially with all the indoor time spent during the winter months and in northern climes. Vitamin D supplements and Canada seem to go especially well together I think.

I have to say that I take an interest in immigration to Canada discussions, issues, and concerns, and find common ground with many here. I always learn something here and also try to contribute occasionally. I don´t apologize for including this interest in my life, and hope everyone else here who feels the same way continues. There´s already too much animosity and anger in the world as it is, and this place brings people together in sharing common ideas, issues, and concerns.

In the meantime, wishing everyone, everywhere good holidays and seasons greetings.

hopefully, some prospective or new Canadian catches this thread and takes the advice to heart. They don´t tell you this part in the Wecome to Canada booklets. I think it will dramatically improve their quality of life in a new environment.

Glad you are still around Richard!

Here in Finland, it´s recommended by the doctor to the darker skin people that they should take Vitamin D cause of their skin.

People used a lot Multivitamin tablets..I guess you need it too in Canada since the climates are same.

Good snaks along with "a" beer at least once a week.
That will get you through the winter as well.

Happy holidays everyone!

Cheers,

Bill

Well, I do tend to do exercise a lot in winter time; 7 days a week, 30 mins per day(at least). It helps my circulation and keep me alert most of the day. Before then, I used to feel lethargic and felt sleepy most of the time but, since I started this routine, it feel much better and much focused. As for supplement, I don´t take any apart from protein that I need for routine.
