Well in the good ol´ US of A we have far too many people to carefully monitor who is and who isn´t a US citizen. We can travel across state borders without an sort of visa inspection, so there is no fear from that...

Furthermore, there are TONS (and I mean TONS) of jobs where you can work ´under the table´. For those who do not know, that means untaxed income. Basically those people are ´unofficially employed´ there is no record of their employment. Many times employers can get away with this by justifying the missing money as business expenses. Many times people who work ´under the table´ will settle for slightly lower wages, since there is no tax taken out of their income.

This may seem all well and good but the fact of the matter remains, how do you qualify to rent a home, have a bank account, etc... without a social security number. This causes an emense risk to both the employee and also society. Hense the reason Bush´s plan to have a work visa lottery of sorts.

There is no way to prevent illegal immigration to the USA, as up to 90% of borders are open; however, if you can atleast control the amount of money exiting the country, and tax as much as possible, fewer lose out.

In my opinion, I think borders should be more open, particularly between Canada, the USA, and Mexico for the justification of commerce and addressing labor shortages. I thought NAFTA was supposed to help with that, but they only address high level professional positions. What about the farmers who need extra help in the harvesting months? I see nothing wrong with employing migrant help, as long as the income is taxed. It helps the US economy and also that of the employees. In many many cases Migrant workers are abliged to address labor shortages, jobs which many many Americans would not even consider for themselves.

Just my 2cents.

Cheers.

Most illegal immigrants to the US come from Mexico and other parts of Central and South America. For instance, if I am not wrong it is estimated that about 9 million Mexicans live illgeally in the US (or nearly 10% of the Mexican population).

These immigrants do not obtain a visa in the American consulates, therefore they do not carry any visa when they cross through the dessertic parts of the Mexico-US border, where it is harder for enforcement agents to patrol.

In the past these immigrants moved to the US temporarily and then returned to their families in Mexico. In the past they could cross to the US and then INS would play a cat-and-mouse game. However, the more strict security and enforcement of the border now prevents immigrants to enter the US. Therefore, immigrants now only make one trip risking their lives through the dessert. If they make it, they stay for a while... Therefore, the police has backfired, increasing the number of illegal immigrants in the USm rather than reducing it. Furthermore, the rate of dead immigrants in the dessert crossings has increased.

Once inside, it is very hard and expensive to track them. Therefore, they move undetected trying to find work opportunities in the farm sector or taking jobs that US citizens do not want, this includes lower wages.

Wounder Boy I got a simple answer to ya: the illegals can take only menial jobs; often times these jobs involve great risks and pay little. It goes both ways: sometimes the illegals get upset at the deceptive conduct of employers who hire them for peanuts to begin with and actually pay them chicken shit, and just kill them damn employers. Other times, the employers have their own goons and run off the illegals after work is done or keep em under control even if they are paid even less than promised! It is a nasty life. I know hoard of illegals in NYC (from Mexico, Haiti, India and China). Their lives are akin those of dogs in their own countries. It is amazing why they love to hang ou tin the US (particularly those from China and India)!
