When you go to Detroit, you are technically "landing" even if you don´t intend to stay. When you get to the border, you will tell the border agent you are landing, and you will be given a yellow ticket and directed to immigration and customs.

First you will go through immigration, where you will show the IO (immigration officer) your visa and all your paperwork. You will need to have your financial statements, address of where you will be moving (if applicable), goods to follow list, etc. Be honest with the IO if you need to return to the States before moving permanently. They are accustomed to this situation although some are more friendly about it than others.

If you have a Canadian address, your PR card will be sent there. If you do not, you will have to apply when you relocate permanently. That´s no big deal--you´ll be given a fax number to fax your information to, and you will still have "proof" that you are a landed PR (your canceled visa in your passport).

You will then be sent across the room to customs. They will go over your goods to follow list--make certain it is complete. You will be subject to tax if you bring in anything extra with you when you move if it is not already on the list. Also, you will need to have your paperwork with all your car information. If you haven´t already done so, go to www.riv.ca for all the necessary information if you are importing your car.

After you land, you must be in the country for 3 out of the next 5 years to retain your PR. So technically, you should have plenty of time to sell your house, wrap up your job and lives and make the jump.

My understanding is that you have to land before your wife delivers the baby. If you do not, your family becomes 3 instead of 2 and that totally changes everything. Hopefully someone here has more information on your best course of action.

hope this helps!

Perhaps I didn´t understand your question. Have you received your passport back from CIC with your visa in it? If you have, you will be "landing" when you go to Detroit to have it stamped. Your actual relocation is another matter.

If you do not yet have your visa, it will come with a deadline attached to it, usually a year from your medicals.

Sorry if there was any confusion. Hope this helps.

You have until the expiration of your medicals OR passport whichever comes first.

You are not landing when you go to Detroit to get the visa affixed to the passport.
You do not land until you cross into Canada the first time

I assumed they meant the Detroit/Windsor border, where you would go to get your visa stamped (ie: land) rather than affixed, which wasn´t the question. Must be some confusion here, but hopefully they have their answer now.
