Subject: Canadian female marrying man in Moroco
I am a moroccan woman who became a canadian citizen in 1998 and changed my moroccan first and last names (legally, I still have the form I filled out and signed to change the name) to anglosaxon names not ever thinking that one day I will want to marry a moroccan man.
now I am wondering if that name change will be a problem to get my future husband to canada to live with me.
Since I was born moroccan, I need to get a moroccan birth certificate and get married in morocco under the moroccan rules and of course with the moroccan name, but once we are ready to file with the canadian embassy, I am worrying that we might hit a snag, and getting info from the embassy by phone was in vain. Is there anything I should know about or should do here in canada before I leave (in 3 months) to get married? thank you.

It doesn´t matter. Canadian people do not think this way.

As long you want to marry a moroccan man, you won´t have any problem to sponsor him. Your non-arabic new names won´t change any thing. If you are happy with them, just stick to them.

The most important thing is your husband. Just think about him. Once married, you can file sonsorship application to bring him to Canada OR to live with him in Morocco.

Chaning names is very usual in the western world. This is because once a girl gets married, she takes her husband´s name. Once divorced, she returns to her original name. Therefore, changing names is something routine here and you shouldn´t be worried. When you change your name, you cannot change it on the documents you have prior to your name change. Therefore, whenever you submit a document with your old name, it should be accompanied with your new name certificate (showing the old and the new ones) and court approval. This has to go with every document bearing your old name. Hence, when you submit your birth certificate, it should be accompanied with your new name documents.

Now, if you have changed your name, I am not sure if you will be allowed to use your old name. You cannot "switch"
between names as you like. Therefore, on your marriage certificate, your new name should appear 9even of the marriage is done in morocco). If you now (Michelle) and you were (Fatima), you cannot use (Michelle) in Canada and (Fatima) in Morocco. ALL THE DOCUMENTS ISSUED AFTER THE NEW NAME APPROVAL SHOULD BEAR YOUR NEW NAME.
