On the application forms there are always a category for (divorced) and one for (separated). You have to check one.

Concerning being separated, there is no documentation to prove your separated status. Therefore, some separated people claim the (single) status on the forms. This is in contrast to (divorced) status which is always documented and appears in the system.

(Separated )literally means (to stop living together).
Therefore, you can still choose (single) status and consider yourself as (single mom) to justify having kids.(say from your boy friend).
However, I don´t know if this is ethically acceptable and whether or not may cause problems in the future (especially for the kids).

What hurts is that men do not care about these things. They just (separate) and go on their lives. You might consider doing the same but the difference with you is the kids.

Wait for more input from others.

If have filed in the past any form as (married/engaged) or mention (separated), then you have to stick to (separated).

If there is no documentation for any engagement and you never stated the separated status on any formal governmental application, I think you can go for single status and (a single mom) for your kids.
Again, I don´´t know how this can be handled from the ethical point of view.

i thinked even if you will say you are separated, since you are not legally (no document),legally like annulment of marriage or documented legal-separation, you still have to carry your husband´s surname, therefore you cant say you are single mom.in asia that´s the law.in canada they will consider single mom if they are not married but have children or divorsed.now it appears that you may wish to tick separated. but i just dont know what will be the meaning for the canada law.if it is legally separated or just separated(philippines style, salita lang walang papel).if i were you, i will just stick to your status then dont sponsor your husband if that´s your problem.the immigration will later send you a letter why you will not sponsor your husband like what happened to my friend who has the same case like yours.then just explain in writing that he is now living-in with another woman for years and never supported his family or children.after that if you really wish to separate with him, try to follow the philippine law in applying for it. like for legal-separation, you need to have 7 yrs not in-contact w/him,no call, no money sending or whatever, for annulment- find a ground from the new family code of the phils.like,drug-users/dealers,battered wife ,crazyness etc. but you should have proof with all these things.remember that changing status is a legal matter and proof is impt.dont believe with filipinos here that you can apply for divorce blah-blah-blah. there´s no such thing here and even in hk.remember, no divorse in phils. and the law applies only to countries where there is divorse. i hope trhis will help.

STOP - have you landed? You MUST advise CIC of your change in status by double registered letter (to make sure they get it) before you do one more thing.
