Subject: almost afraid to tell you
my fiance applied as a skilled worker in Paris this past June 2004. He got his AOR within about 6 weeks. His file was well prepared- no formal language test but very good documentation to prove his home country has french as an official language.

CIC made a written request for a second proof of funds - 3 months of statements and employment. (we put the settlement money in the bank and never touched it - thank goodness) Paris did did not receive his documents and ended up closing his file. e-client was so slow he had no idea that the documents had not arrived.

After several weeks, some encouragement from my local MP and many phone calls to Paris... his file was reopened 3 weeks ago (keep copies of everything including courier reciepts).

Upon calling Paris to confirm that they had received his second round of documents we received a wonderful shock. They had accepted the application and assigned him 74 points. 5 years work, masters degree, optimum age, full marks for french, minumal marks for english, and I think there might have been something else. No family in Canada- I had been told declaring a fiance in Canada would have counted but complicated his particular file. He had no arranged employment.

During that confirmation phone call he was told to go and get his medicals. They have now been completed (after paying far too much money), and in our case... the doctor was willing to share test results etc with us. My fiance will be able to bring a copy to Canada with him to help him establish his healthcare records here. (bonus)

Medicals are enroute to Ottawa, and he was encouraged by his Immigration officer to send a copy to Paris so that he did not have to wait for Ottawa. Nice! Obviously, each embassy is different in the service it can provide because of workload. We did not choose Paris... it is the embassy assigned to the region where my fiance lives.

Not sure why Paris is not so busy - my guess is that north african citizens would see Europe as a more likely choice for a new life. the European countries it serves are strong in themselves so the desire to leave is not significant. I can only speculate.

Anyway... we are quickly sending his ROFL fees along with the medical report today. We are not sure what the wait time will be for the background check but my fiance´s file should be fairly straight forward. 1 home country and 2 successful post 9/11 trips to the US. He has been checked and cleared before.

In my mind the Passport requests is all that is left. We are trying hard not to plan any travel dates. His acceptance to Canada has been exciting for us, but his extended family is devestated. It is hard to be the first of your family to move far, far away. He might take some time to reassure his family that Canada is not the moon and that he can call as often as they like, and he will not freeze, and he will come home to visit, and that his culture and his traditions will not be lost forever. I personally think this is the hardest aspect of the entire immigration process.

Anyway, guys...I am daring to hope and dream that my man will be in Canada in time to see the cherry blossoms on the trees.

Good... (in reply to: almost afraid to tell you)
It feels nice isn´t?? Is good to know everything is getting better for you. I am not sure how long the background clearence takes when you appy from outside Canada. In my case I applied within Canada and It took 6 months but I think if you apply from outside is faster.
Now I am just waiting for the local immigration to call me to set up the landing appointment. It should happen within the next weeks. I ´m planning a trip as well to see my family and friends...
You´ll see that very soon al this procedure is going to be part of the past. Best wishes...

So glad for you (in reply to: almost afraid to tell you)
Dear Sharon,

I am still reading the posts specially because I want to rejoice with you when your fiance will be in Vancouver with you.

My wife has landed with me a week ago after so many problems in China (passports and visa stolen). We are so happy in Canada. She is already working hard to learn French and though it is very cold, she is very happy here.

It was also a shock for her family when she began to tell them that she wanted to immigrate (she is an only child), but finally they got used to it. And long distance phone calls are so cheap now.

Good luck and keep us informed.
