Subject: Can we carry money in Cash while entering Canada?
I already have my visa stamped and I am shortly landing in Canada for initial entry. We are family of four. I intend to stay in Canada for minimum possible period for the initial entry, as I have contractual obligations outside Canada. I have following questions in my mind if anyone can answer

1. Can we carry funds in Cash as proof of funds while entering for the initial landing?

2. Do we need to keep these funds deposited in bank accounts?

3. How long does it take to get the PR Card?

4. How long does it take to get a SIN?

5. Is there any other procedure required to be completed?

6. I am entering via road, from USA, any special procedures, precautions?

7. Which would be the best port of entry by road from USA?

1. Can we carry funds in Cash as proof of funds while entering for the initial landing?

Preferebly not. Transfer your funds to a Canadian bank, traveller cheques, etc. Everytime you carry more than 10K across the border there are a few forms you have to fill when you leave the US and when you enter Canada.

2. Do we need to keep these funds deposited in bank accounts?

Why wouldn´t you?

3. How long does it take to get the PR Card?
About 6 weeks.

4. How long does it take to get a SIN?
About 3 weeks.

5. Is there any other procedure required to be completed?
No. Bring your Passport, funds and CORP.

6. I am entering via road, from USA, any special procedures, precautions?
Make sure your car comply with Canadian standards if you are planning to keep your car in Canada.

7. Which would be the best port of entry by road from USA?
They are all the same. Just check the "Border schedule" some border crossings in some ports of entry have scheduled immigration services for newcomers.

As I have contractual obligations outside of Canada I will not be staying in Canada for long (only a couple of days I intend to stay for initial entry). Still I will need to keep the money in Canada?

Hi Maurya,

As DocD has mentioned dont bring money more than 10K canadian dollars and you can keep it in cash with you and dont need to put it in any bank.

you need to apply for the health card too. PR card will not be delivered outside Canada so you must provide canadian address. Right now canadian high commision is facing problems with their website so it might take longer than 6 weeks to get your PR card.

As per my knowledge one cant post or send you PR CARD through courier, so keep that in mind that you need someone to travel to get that PR card in your possession.

I have a question for you, how long did it take to get your PR after applying to Buffalo office? I think you are in USA on H1 and citizen of India. Please reply back

Best luck
N

How long did it take to get the PR Visa (in reply to: Can we carry money in Cash while entering Canada?)
Hello N,

I live in Dubai and not in USA. I am traveling to USA first and then by road to Canada.

I applied for migration through an agent in Dubai by September 2008 and I got everything done by June 3 2009.

Thanks
Maurya

Per person CAD 10,000/- or per family (in reply to: Can we carry money in Cash while entering Canada?)
Now, I am going to travel with My family, as well as my brother in Law, Does this limit apply to a person or whole family?

I am also trying to carry a statement of my investments along with brokers certificate. So I can carry less money in cash and they can take this investment as proof of funds.

Any help on this please?

Hi Maurya,

Thanks for your reply for my question.

Now come to your question, and the answer is 10000$ per family. and your brother-in-law is not in your family. He can carry the amount. Keep in mind don´t bring more than 10000$.

You wont need that much, if you are just going to live normal life and not interested in buying a house or business or something. You don´t need to bring the brokers certificate with you as a proof of fund as you wont be able to use them for your family support.

If you have a small kid take him/her with you when ever you go and apply for any cards so that if they require to see or take a picture of your kid it will be easier. As one of my friend didn´t take his daughter for all these applications and she left for back home in 5 days after initial entry, now PR card issuers wants her back to take the picture.

Best luck,
N.

Can I carry money into Canada? (in reply to: Can we carry money in Cash while entering Canada?)
I am a US citizen. I live in Michigan and I´m interested buying a classic car from a gentleman living in Toronto Canada. The asking price of the car is $12,500.00 USD.
Can I enter the country with that much cash on me.
