Subject: When to request/submit FBI clearance records
Apologies if this has been asked and answered several times before...

My American spouse and I are looking to submit our (outside Canada) sponsorship immigration application once our marriage is registered and our marriage certificate is delivered (probably late March/early April).

We´re just looking for a second opinion/reference on when exactly my spouse should request the FBI clearance, as we´re reading that could take up to 18 weeks to get back. Our immigration consultant is saying to hold off until near the END of the application process (due to the fact that they expire and my spouse would have to do it twice). The reading we had done on the Immigration Canada Web site made it sound like it should be submitted with the application at the beginning.

We´re just trying to be as proactive/efficient as possible so we aren´t waiting unnecessarily for pieces of information that could have been requested earlier. Like everyone else I´m sure, we´d like to be in the small percentile that has the full application approved in the shortest amount of time...

Could someone help clarify this for us? Or does someone have firsthand experience with the FBI forms and how long they typically take and when in the process they should be requested and submitted?

Thanks so much!

We sent ours with the application, although I don´t know officially, to us it was worth it to submit it to try and speed up the process, even if it means the possibility of having to redo it at a later date. On the document checklist, it does say to include it, so we did.

Sorry meant to also say that ours only took 3 weeks to get back, but it might have been a slow time for them. Like with everything else with this whole process, it changes day to day and depends on how many applications they are dealing with at the time. We plan to redo it if it has expired by the time the sponsorship application goes through (that way it will be ready for them for the PR application, even if they don´t ask for it). Same as you, we are trying to be as proactive as possible to save ourselves time.

Hi DJ,

I agree with ConfusedCanadian, send it with your application. its just a matter of few more $ to pay if you have to do it twice. But rest is assured.

Best luck,
N

Hi, I am in a similar situation, I have a GC from US and my boyfriend is Canadian citizen. We plan to get married in April. Can you tell me where do I get application forms etc for FBI clearance? is there a website?
Thanks a lot. Immigration lawyers told us I need to wait for a year after marriage to get my PR/Work permit for canada. Its quite depressing. Do you know if that is thed wait time in reality?
Thanks a lot
