Subject: Immigrating to CANADA as PR, but got pregnant
hi, my husband and I applied to immigrate to canada and we are approved and got our immigrant visas, however i discovered that i am 7 weeks pregnant. We are obliged to leave for canada within 90 days so my questions are:

1. Would I be entitled for a health benefit? and deliver the baby for free or on a discounted bill?

2. If ever i won´t be entitled for a health benefit, can someone recomend us on what to do? say, should we get a private health insurance? or any suggestions.

Thank you hope you could shed a light on my concerns. :-)

If you reside in Alberta you will be covered the second you arrive.

If you reside in any other province you will be covered after three months of residency.

Your only seven weeks pregnant be happy. You will be covered in plenty of time. Scope out the newer Hospitals they have really fancy birthing rooms.

Now if you would have been illegal your baby once born is automatically covered.

Congradulations Mommy to be!

Going to an OB/Gyn is not that expensive even without a Health Card. Your seven weeks pregnant no big deal. You have 36 weeks minus seven so only 29 more weeks to go. 29 weeks now that is a long time.

Sharon says Vancouver got snow so wear your boots and a warm coat.

Balmy 15c yesterday in Toronto. Barbecue weather!

Be happy Mommy and relax.

you will need to wait 90 days to get your medical card in BC but as Roy said, that first doctors visit will not be that expensive. You should buy insurance to cover your first 90 days, regardless.

Our snow is gone, (lasted 2 hours). Spring is beautiful in Vancouver - you will love it.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Before coming to Canada, you will definitely want to purchase private health insurance to see you through the first 3 months. Be aware that not all private health plans will cover prenatal care (often--but not always--considered a "pre-existing condition") so you will want to shop wisely. Health coverage in this country is not inexpensive if you are not covered. During your 3 month wait time you will need at least 3 prenatal visits (plus various tests) so take that cost into consideration when purchasing private insurance. It will be well worth it.

If cost is an issue you may want to consider researching midwives. They almost always charge far less than "conventional" pregnancy/birthing options and will often accept cash payments if you don´t have sufficient insurance. There are wonderful options, but I would recommend doing your research before landing. There should be no shortage of midwives in Vancouver.

good one Roy! When Toronto hits 17 in March it is big news. 17 in Vancouver is a big yawn. We had 1/2 a day of snow this winter.
