Subject: assistance to sigle moms
  hi,
i am a 33 yr old single mom to a 2yr old toddler. i am thinking of moving to Canada from Botswana to start an undergrad degree (thus would try for a student visa). 1. i was wondering if the Canadian government offers any kind of assistance to someone who would have my status, something like the US social welfare programme? 2. if there is, how would one qualify: after how long having lived there, what is the spacific assistance given etc?
thanking u in advance
kaelo

the best you could hope for is some form of international schoolarship from a private foundation that would support international advancement of education.

nothing from the government here - sorry. They don´t even offer such support to residents.

good try.

I think such assistance should never be created since it can easily be abused.
However, there are some other benefits that you can get from the government regarding being a single mom. Just visit the Immigrant Settlement Services in your area.

Good luck.

apron, the benefits you are referring to are for single moms who are citizens of Canada not someone who wants to come here from another part of the world looking for an education, living expenses and child care. And even then, those benefits are few and far between - just asks all the single moms out there that can´t make ends meet.

@Sharon: I knew, I just lured you out. In other words, you admit that Canadian government isn´t doing a good job in taking care of its citizens and residents. The ridiculously expensive cost of nursery, the increase of taxes during crisis time and the increasing number of crimes are three of many aspects that you can notice.

Oh, read this one too:

Good luck to all of you.

you lured me nowhere. If is not the governments job (read TAXPAYER) to pay for every expense of every person that has a challenge in their life. We help where we can, how we can but some personal responsibility has to go with it.

Single Mom´s, Seniors, people with mental and physical disabilities, single Dad´s, new Canadians, people who lose their job... just exactly how much money should be spread around and where do you think that money comes from? it certainly does not fall out of the sky.

As for your newspaper of choice - it is free for a reason.

thanks to everyone for the advice n info. can u guys suggest the cheapest/ most reasonable place to live in terms of child minding fees, school, housing and general cost of living.

n in terms of schooling, would it be advisable to go to a tech college then further, or straight into a 4 year college program?

i have some money saved, it´s just that i m trying to be frugal.

childcare is around $600 per month. school as an international student is expensive. it will depend on where you wish to attend. Over and above your child care expenses I would suggest you are going to need $1,500 - 2,000 per month - and that is assuming you are taking the bus.

The path you are contemplating is a tough one.
