To feed your ignorance and racism: go and look for two great scholars in their feilds (I am only showing an example as there are too many):
1) Professor Dr Zuwail Ahmed: a NOBEL prize awarded scientist. His native country is Egypt. He was educated there before settling in US
2) Professor Sir Magdy Yacoub. He is the pioneer heart (cardiac) surgeon of the 20thm century. He is Egyptian and was educated there before he settled in London

Both, they did not and will not need to change their accent...for whatttttt? ONLY a person would change their accent if they are living in HEAVEN. Canada, as far as I know, though a nice country is far from being the HEAVEN. 6 months frozen winter and the next 6 months you are eaten by mosquitoes, with a size I have never seen in Africa. Mosqitoes are as big as the shrimp.

Zuwail Ahmed and Magdy Yacoub certainly have linguistic skills and mental status which is far greater than someone like G W Bush. GWB is the one who should change his accent. G W Bush should make HARVARD ashamed of their standard.

50% of the DOCTORS in Britian are foreigners and the British Health system is far superior compared to US and Canada. Of the 50% local doctors in Britain, at least 20% are born in Britain to immigrants of ethnic minorities. I have never heard of someone asking them to change their accent.

Canada, with all due respect, is living under the broken wing of a collapsed empire (USA). With such ignorance, hidden racism and arrogance, Canada will follow the steps of the collapsing empire.

wakie wakie

Forgot t remind the ignorant:
Because you are such an arrogant ignorant: Zuwail and Magdy Yacoub are Egyptians ..so automatically they are Arabs....and they still speak the heavy accent..but is much understandable that the accent of GW Bush. Their writing and grammars are higher than Roy´s. They work hard in silence. They are not sitting 24/7 on the net to serve their boredom

When Doctor# 3 mentioned the Arabs and Chinese in his posting, he was not racist in his inclination. He just gave a very common example of foreign doctors practicing in Canada. He meant to show how foriegn doctors can lack the communication skills and this can be a very serious issue in Medicine.

Based on my experience as a practicing physician, I agree with Doctor# 3 with what he posted. I have been dealing with many Arabic and Chinese doctors and many of them do have accents that can work as a communication barrier.

Changing accent is not easy. Accent usually results from how one articulates and pronounces letters in his original language. It affects the way he pronounces English letters and thus affects the understanding of his speech. Usually the accent vanishes with time. The more one lives in the English-speaking country, the more his speech becomes closer to the right English.

The two examples you gave, Ahmed Zuweil (by the way, he is a chemist, not a physician) and Magdy Yaqub speak English very well. You can listen to them on You Tube. This might be because of the long time they spent in the US and UK, respectively. Arabs just settled in the UK/North American have a bad accent and it usually improves with time. This also applies to any one coming from non-English speaking country.

Finally, the UK is no longer the "great" Britian. I really don´t know why the British (and those who live there) still speak about the glory of the UK .it is no longer a great country, in contrast to Canada and the US. It is totally dependent on the US. All the technology and advancements made in all fields including medicine, computer..etc comes mainly from the US. I have seen many British migrating to the US to make more money and escaping the misery of their country.....

Canada is the sister of the US..it doesn´t matter to rest under the wing of the US as long as Canadians enjoy the luxurious life of the US and its achievements (with some modifications made here in Canada!!). Canada is a beautiful country and far less racist than the UK and other European countries. I wonder why did you leave all the good things in Canada and just focused on the mosquitos?? If the US collpases, I believe that the UK will collapse before Canada...

So, you are, right now, a practicing physicians.....and you are in position to judge Arabs and Chinese!
your IPS [**.80.244.106] has been around for a while in different career. I guess, you need help.

You are a troll. Plain and simple.

If you do not like Canada, then leave. If you have left then goodbye no need for you on the forums.

The sad fact is there are communication issues with immigrants and IF one wants to be respected and follow their chosen career paths then it is up to THEM to overcome any barriers.
Me personally I have had several doctors from other countries and have kicked each of them to the curb.
Sometimes it is not so much what they themselves say it is their unwillingness to develop the communications skills to UNDERSTAND the patient. They end up moving to other areas after they end up with NO patients. Then again that is our fault for not accepting substandard care from people who REFUSE to work on the needed skills.

FYI I know full well who are arabs and who are not, it is amazing how trolls want to focus on small part of a statement instead of it as a whole.

You are the one who obviously has issues and can´t grasp the fact that people do not agree with you.

Triple dare you to accuse me of racism. I find it amusing that card gets tossed around when you have no idea who it is
that makes the post.

Cameron, I don´t quite understand your problem - everyone is an idiot or racist but you. You go off on tangents and twist peoples words and intent.

I don´t care what part of the world you live in, there is an expectation that newcomers need to make an attempt to fit in. Whether that means learning a language, adjusting to a culture or modifying their personal habits. Why is that so shocking to you?

Canada does not NEED to be the best at everything, nor do we believe we are the best at everything. All that is being suggested is if you want to come and live/play in the Canadian sandbox, you are required to play by Canadian rules - even if other people´s rules are better. It is OUR sandbox. If you don´t like the game... play somewhere else.

I am tired of being asked to apologize for our way of life. If you don´t like it - don´t come. I am particularly tired of you turning every question and answer into a debate where only one person is right - you.

It is actually ... (in reply to: To the person who posted DOCTOR #3)
2 months of summer and 10 of winter(part of the publicity is that is 6 and 6 but that does not reflect reality). Spring and Fall are pretty wintery like.
As per the accent´s issue. I tell all the Canadiana Red- Necks that if they live in this country they should get used to hear accents as well. If they do not like multiculturalism, they can move somewhere else or riot against Ottawa for trying allowing more immigrants into the country.
I have the same rights as them with or without an accent. English Canadianas give the same attitude to French Canadians, however if you have lived in QUebec, I´d rather stay living with the anglophones. The Quebecoise have a worse attitude towards immigrants than the English.
I personally believe that older generations are more intolerant, I have witnessed better integration with the youngsters and the Government is doing some work in the School System to promote Cultural Diversity.

I don´t know where you live but we have 2 seasons - rain and less rain. I stopped wearing any sort of coat in April and will reluctantly put one back on in October. If that is what you call 10 months of winter - I will take it.

There are parts of the world that get 10 months of temperatures between 30-40C. For some, that is worse than winter.

So we have to resort to name calling also?

"rednecks" and you wonder WHY you do not really fit in?

Also the thing is called "Acclimatization" look it up.

It will take a couple of years to "Acclimatize" to being in Canada.
Again if it is a huge issue, I am sure no one will complain when you board the plane.

Canadians of all backgrounds are tired of hearing how bad immigrants have it, only a vocal few who I will say are TOO LAZY to work at fitting in or updating their credentials OR even changing careers spoil it for the rest of us.

I came here with enough experience and AMERICAN tickets that I should have been making 70 to 80 an hour and ended up being at 12-16 as an apprentice. I looked around and changed careers. I didn´t moan and whine and complain about how bad Canada is, how unfair it was to m. I realized it was a PRIVILEGE to immigrate here and embraced that fact whole heartedly.

Perhaps some whiners here need to grow up and put on their big person clothes and get busy fitting in or leaving?

my grandparents came to Canada with the intentions of farming. They spent the first year in a sod house in the side of a hill because there was no sort of shelter on the property and they discovered that they had to clear all the rocks from the land before they could even think about planting something. They did not speak a word of english and had to learn.

My neighbour came from Uganda when Edi Amin was in control. They worked very, very hard when they first arrived because whatever status they had back home meant nothing here. One of their kids is now an RCMP and the other is a emergency room nurse and they themselves have the money to retire in comfort - but they worked damn hard and sacrificed much.

What you are balking at is the immigrant experience - whether your destination is Canada, US, Australia, UK, France or Dubai. It was hard in 1850, 1900, 1980 and is hard in 2010. It is HARD for the people that already live here too. If you are not ready for hard - stay where you are.
