Although I thought I knew this, it´s still not clear based on what the CIC website says.
If a PR is approaching the end of his/her 5 year residency and has satisfied the 2 year rule, and if the PR really doesn´t need or use the PR card for any purpose, is it still a requirement to apply for a new PR card after the 5 years complete? I know of a few Americans who have long since lived in Canada as PRs (10 - 20 years), and never bothered to renew their PR cards since when originally issued. For health card renewal, drivers licence and other proof of residency are sufficient.

(in reply to: Maintaing PR status) A PR card is
only required when permanent residents seek to re-enter the country via commercial
transportation. Permanent residents in Canada are not required to hold a PR card. (SOURCE CIC)
It´s a personal choice whether or not to possess a PR card.
However, it seems necessary to have one when it comes to applying for a job or an academic course where one must prove her status in Canada.
I would never go to my consulate office without it because people over there are eager beaver over PR CARDS.
"Are you a PR?" "Did you bring your PR card?" "Bring your PR card."
