Subject: Sponsoring spouse
  Hi all,

I´m about sponsoring my wife to come to Canada. Does anyone have experience with the process and pitfalls? What are potential reasons to not get the visa?

In addition, IM0008 Q12 asks: ´can you communicate in english´? how relevant is this questions - does it have an impact on the decision?

thanks in advance for your answers!

Well consider this your spouse only speaks one language that you can´t speak, so how do you communicate? Now if you speak the same language and your from her country the question is not relevant at all.

Then when an interview comes and she/he gets asked regarding plans for employment and he/she can not speak either official language of Canada her/his plans to work are not well thought out.

Roy,

Thanks for your reply.
We do both speak basics of the other one´s language but it´s not fluent but by far sufficient for daily conversation. In addition, how relevant is her not speaking english/french very well at this point of time as she is intended to learn english after arrival (as we´ll speak english at home she will pick up rapidly)?
How relevant is that my income is sufficient to cover a family that - from a financial point of view - she would not be required to get into employment and can concentrate on her english studies?

Is there are a hidden point system providing points for each category such as language and education?
My understanding so far has been that there´s nothing like this when it comes to sponsor a spouse.

She only intends to learn English AFTER her arrival. Like why does she want to come to Canada to be just with you, LOL

Why would she wait to learn English? How would she get a bus from point A to point B?

Your setting yourselves up for a refusal.

You will be asked about plans for your futures and due to her not learning English the two of you have no real plans.

Roy, good point. As I stated before, she speaks some english - she is not fluent, though.
There are European countries where the spouse has to pass a language exam before the visa is being granted. However, this is new to me that language could lead to a refusal for a spouse. The sponsor guide book does not mention language as a pre-requisite for getting the spousal visa. It is even mentioned that a translator can be brought to the intervew. Is there a guide book for officers available that clearly provides indications how to deal with this aspect?

Thanks again!

the english proficiency has more to do with the level of communication between you as a couple rather than adaptability and employment opportunities.

Add that with her potential problems finding work once she gets here and all of a sudden this is a big risk for CIC.

The manual can be found here:

a proof that the couple is able to communicate should be included in the application to avoid any doubts.
