Subject: PR: 2 years in each 5 years? |

I quoted below message from www.canadavisa.com and wondrer if anyone can tell me what it exactly means by "must accumulate two years of "residency days" in each five-year period"?
Permanent Residents are not obliged to remain in Canada, and are in no way restricted from departure at any time. However, as a Canadian Permanent Resident, you must accumulate two years of "residency days" in each five-year period in order to meet your Canadian residency obligations.
does this mean that once PR is granted, i must complete at least 2 years of stay in canada, out of the given 5 yerars period, in order to maintain my PR status? if yes, then what happen if i just complete 2 years of stay in that 5 years but not 3 full years before i´m obligible to apply for citizenship?

(in reply to: PR: 2 years in each 5 years?) You are mixing these two things up.
In order to keep your status as a PR you have to stay in Canada 2 out of 5 yrs.
To become a Canadian citizen you have to stay 3 out of 4.
You are not obligated to apply for citizenship, you can be a PR the rest of your life if you wish.

(in reply to: PR: 2 years in each 5 years?) thanks for your reply, first of all. pls correct me if i´m wrong below.
take my case as example, i landed & got my PR back in Mar 2008 and my PR will expire in Mar 2013. so if i goto canada in Jan 2011 and stay until Jan 2013. i can maintain my PR status and that also means i´ll have another 5 years granted to either stay 2 years between 2013-2018 to keep maintaining my PR status OR stay 3 years out 4 between 2013-2018 before i´m obligible to apply for citizenship.

(in reply to: PR: 2 years in each 5 years?) You are not obligated to apply for citizenship. That is your choice. If choose not to apply for citizenship, you can still live in Canada as a PR.

Landed Immigrant Status or PR (in reply to: PR: 2 years in each 5 years?) My husband and I were landed immigrants (by previous marriages)in Canada. Bernard for roughly thirty years of continious residency. Bernard has two Canadian daughters. I lived in Canada for 13 years. We left Canada and moved to the states in 1997 and then married. Bernard has been offered a teaching job at a Canadian College where he previously worked for ten years. We would like to have our status reinstated if possible, how do we do that?

(in reply to: PR: 2 years in each 5 years?) DocD, what u mean I´m not obligated to apply citizenship? Do u mean I never get to apply if I can´t 3 out of 4 years in my given 5 PR years? But I can only keep my PR as long as I keep staying in Canada for at least 2 years in each 5 years?

Land of Confusion (in reply to: PR: 2 years in each 5 years?) Eligible

Let us just ´refudiate´ all the confusion.
Thank you.

(in reply to: PR: 2 years in each 5 years?) .210.12.40 - you never get to apply for citizenship if you do not meet citizenship residency requirements. You will remain a PR - assuming you maintain those status requirements.
I fail to understand what your intentions are. Live here as little as possible but accept all the benefits? Don´t bother. People like you make Canadian nationals hate immigrants.

(in reply to: PR: 2 years in each 5 years?) sharon, nono, that´s NOT what my intention is. my plan is go back for good without any restriction that i´m not aware of. in short, i just want worry-free.
