Policies towards immigrants

Subject: Policies towards immigrants
This question is directed towards forum members in Canada. There is a lot of back and forth going on towards delay in applications.

I wanted to enquire whether policy makers in Canada are favourable towards calling more immigrants.

E.g. after 9/11 in the U.S. there has been a clear markdown and slowing of procedure towards new immigrants.

What are the views you read in papers. T.V. in Canada? Really does not matter to anyone in general - I mean if we all qualify on points sooner or later we are going to make it but to be mentally prepared on time-lines.

Canada is committed to immigration and every year the number if immigrants has been about 250,000 +/-. As you may know, there are targets set for each region of the world so that there is a balance created of where applicants are coming from. In some cases, there is a balance between quota and applicantion from that region in one year and therefore there is no long backlog. In regions such as India and Pakistan the numbers of applicants far surpass the numbers that Canada is prepared to take in a year. Consequently, the wait seems to go on forever. There is likely 5 applications for every spot available from that region. So everyone waits until they find themselves at the top of the waiting list. Not too many other options.

I doubt that Canada will change its policy about balancing where it is getting its immigrants from. You can see on the CIC website the distribution. Having said that, I think the government and all those living within the clutches of CIC would agree that having a 4-5 year wait for the over loaded countries is not agreeable. I see that changing. It is on the public radar screen but it may take some time to find an alternative.

Canada cannot intake more immigrants annually than it already does now. We need to insure there is infrastructure in place (hospitals, schools) and adequate jobs available. There is no point to opening the doors and destroying the very thing everybody seems to want.

To directly answer your question... Canada needs workers to keep our economy going. It does not matter what government is in power or what is happening around the world...without immigration, Canada will have some serious problems in 50 years or sooner. I do not see that reality changing.
