Subject: What next after interview

I had my interview at Canadian Embassy in Manila for spousal sponsorship on Aug. 19th, and haven´t heard back from them. since then They have my passport since May 1st, and I need the passport to write the IELTS exam and to make a quick trip to Hong Kong. Can I request to have my passport back? Why did the embassy hold on to my passport for so long (5 months)? Anyone has such experience with the Embassy in Manila before?
