Subject: Hi everyone, please help me. My family and I ...
Hi everyone, please help me. My family and I landed and got our PR cards 2 years ago. However due to crisis (lack of jobs), we returned. We are planning to return to Canada and live permanently since our PR´s expired in 2013. My question is,

1. can we (a family with a 3 year-old child) survive with a limited amount of money? I know that there are benefits and subsidies for low-income family, but I am not sure whether newcomers like us are qualified for those benefits.

2. is it difficult now to get a job with $10-$14/hour salary?

Thank you in advance.

THE GST/HST CREDIT (in reply to: Hi everyone, please help me. My family and I ...)
The GST/HST credit is a tax-free quarterly payment that helps individuals and families with low and modest incomes offset all or part of the GST or HST that they pay

Thanks for the reply Anonymous,

If we´re planning to depart in March, which benefits could we apply, besides CCTB? Can we file a tax report in March?

a family of 3 cannot live on $10-14 an hour. If you have not filed a Canadian income tax return, there is no GST/HST coming your way for a year as you are not currently in the system.

Hi sharon, thanks for the reply but you are not answering my questions.

That´s just temporary since my son is still too young, I heard that childcare is ridiculously expensive there, so there´s no point my wife works just to pay the childcare.

question 1) - what is your definition of a limited amount of money? In most Canadian homes, 2 adults work- small children or not. That is because it is expensive to live here. Average rent is about $1,200 a month. $14 gives you $29,100 before taxes. Yes, you will still be paying some taxes. Assume 15%...so $4,368 which leaves you with $25,000 on a good day. Divide by 12 - $2,100 a month. Rent is about $1,200 - if you are lucky. That leaves you $900 for food, electricity, phone, medical insurance (mandatory),clothes and transportation. A bus pass is $125 a month for each person. A litre of milk is over $2.

2)$10-$14 an hour jobs depend on what city, what skills, level of english, etc. The economy is still bad - so there is lots of competition out there for the available positions.

To think there are going to be sufficient subsidies to allow your family to live on 1 low income is dreaming.

If you only earn $10 - you are hooped

Please stay away for about 3 more years. Economy may improve by then and you may have a better chance.

Ok then, thanks all for being honest. I am assured that Canadian economy is still bad then. Staying away for 3 more years is not an option for us. It´s either go or throw the PR cards away to the rubbish bin. I got the PR in 2008, it expired in 2013. We´d been in Canada for 3 months only, so we need to depart in June 2011 or we would never be granted the PR extension in 2013 (because we didn´t fulfill the 2 out of 5 years rule).

However I still need to ask, is it difficult to get a salary with $10-$14 in Greater Vancouver area? My language skill is 8 out of 10, speaking English is not a problem at all. For academic skills, I understand that my previous skills would not be considered in Canada, so I won´t rely on it.
I am not expecting to work in the same field as I am doing now. I am willing to work anything, unless in some fast-food restaurants, which I read that they pay only $8-$9 but the work is tedious.
Please if anyone could answer or give me suggestion in that matter. Thank you.

Hello,

Don´t follow the advice to stay away for 3 years, you will not be able to renew your card. I don´t know where Sharon lives but the average rent is certainly not $1,200 in every city and every neighborhood. If you can get that $14/hr don´t underestimate it, it can get you started. You will just have to work overtime and live within your means. Not everyone in Canada is making $50/hr. Overtime, your situation may improve. Your situation is nothing unseen. People who are discouraging were never in your shoes. You have to do it for your kids to have a better life, not for yourself.
