Subject: Family Allowance?
  Hi Everyone,
My partner and I are due to move from Australia to Canada in the new year.
She is a Canadian citizen.
We both want to move to Canada for the birth of our child.
For the last few years she has been living in Australia.
We intend to land a couple of months before the birth of our child.

Will my partner be eligible to claim for any kind of family assistance / baby bonus. All the legislation I have read so far seem to indicate that we need to have lived there for at least 18 months?

Any advice is most appreciated.

cheers
Jules

she would not be entitled to any sort of maternity leave - as that is tied to Canadian employment immediately prior to the birth. As for baby bonuses, it may vary from province to province and your research is likely as good as mine on that one.

Thanks Sharon.

I will keep trawling the internet until I find some concrete legislation.

•you or your spouse or common-law partner must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a protected person, or a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months, and who has a valid permit in the 19th month.

Pretty clear to me!

Out of curiosity, just how bad is it in Australia that you wish to burden the Canadian system, though you have lived and worked for Australia for years? Since the mother is Canadian, I would presume that claiming citizenship for the kid should be relatively easy and could be done in Australia itself through the Canadian Consular services, no?

Don´t get me wrong. It is not bad in Australia at all.
The main reason we are moving is to allow my partner to have the support network of her family around her for the birth of our baby. Her parents and friends all still live in Canada.
I will be working full time (once my immigration is approved). However as everyone know 1 wage supporting a family does make it difficult to make ends meet.

Thank-you for the above link - we will read it tonight and see how the legislation applies to her, as she is a permanent resident & citizen.

thnx
Jules

Thankfully I believe this will apply to us...

a) If any of the following applies to you, you will also have to complete the schedule RC66SCH, Status in Canada/Statement of Income.
You and/or your spouse or common-law partner have moved back to Canada and re-established residential ties.

she will still need to be in Canada for 18 months as a resident before she can have access to benefits.
