Subject: Marrying a Non Canadian
Hello,

I am a Canadian citizen and am currently dating a Non-Canadian, he is Jamaican and we both work for a Cruise Line. We met while working on the Cruise Line and are currently thinking about getting married and living in Canada. What do we need to do or consider?

Thank you,

if he is able to get a visitors visa... do that first and do not discuss the idea of marriage. once he is inside Canada, marry him and apply to sponsor him from inside the country. only other option is to marry him outside canada and have him wait outside the country for the process to complete. you will need lots of proof of the relationship and you will be responsible for him for 3 years.

Hi there, I´m a Canadian who married a non-Canadian, been married 14 yrs, got three kids (all Canadian Citizens). Our mistake? 1/Deciding to come back to Canada, naively thinking they won´t break families up, after all Canada is soooooo humanitarian and compassionate, right? (That´s the myth I grew up with) 2/Wife and I deciding to play honest (big mistake) and have the wife go to home country to wait out the "few months" we were told this would take (rather than have her come in with false pretenses), again naively thinking they (CIC) wouldn´t be soooooooo humanitarian and compassionate as break families up, and keep them broken up, right?. Anyhow, my advice submit your papers RIGHT NOW!!

I´m in the same position as Karen - I´m Canadian, boyfriend is Jamaican, we also met while working on a cruise ship and are also getting married and hope to live in Canada. We were naive to think that this would be relatively easy - we´re in love and want to be together - it would be nice to think that my country that I´m so proud to call home would be supportive. I´m not sure of all that is ahead, but I know now that it won´t be an easy road. Good luck Karen. Just make sure to stay together - no matter where you call home.

does he have his visa to visit already? if so, marry here and do an OUTLAND application immediately. July may be premature before they will allow him back.

yes he can go back to Turkey but they will not likely let him back into Canada until after the application is completed.

I am a british citizen, who is marrying a canadian. I do not need a visa to visit there but i do require a work permit to work there. Would i be able to apply from inside canada or would i have to submit the forms before i visit? Would it be better o marry in the UK, or after i arrive there?

I also married my boyfriend from the cruise ship, he is in Canada now but it was a long road. There are a couple options, some people get married and continue to work on the ship, during that time you can reestablish your ties to canada again (the application outlines what you need to do that, have a house bought in your name, a job offer or rental agreement.) we did an outland application, meaning we were apart during until his visa was approved it tooked just over three months. another options is to do it inland but that takes way longer and he won´t be able to work or leave canada during that time.
