Subject: Deportation because of DUI?
  Hi
My husband Robert(British Citizen) got a fine for a DUI in 2002. He was deported from Canada in August 2003. I?m a Canadian citizen and am currently living in the UK with my husband. We want to return to Canada for a visit in July 2005. Do you think this will be possible? Do you know what steps we need to take? I don?t think this was the reason he got deported...he was just unlucky and this was used against him. Please help. We only want to go for one week!
Cheers
Lianne

you should go to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/applications/rehabil.html

where you will find out if he is able to apply for criminal rehabilitation. If so, the site has the necessary instructions and forms. Good luck.

Was the deportation only due to DUI or repeat DUI or DUI and something else? This is a very useful info because a lot of people drink and would help to know how serious consequences can be if you drink a pint and smell booze on your breath!

In the US, I am aware of deportations because of shop-lifting violations! Sometimes the stolen goods were less than 100$ worth.

Hey - thanks for all the replies. He received a DUI in April of 2003 - I think he was double over the limit, no one harmed and no damage done. He was fined and sent on his way. The police officials knew that he was in Canada on holiday but did not deport him at this time. An anonymous phone call (ex-girlfriend) was made to the Immigration Officials and they came to arrest him on the spot. He was a bit over his stay as well so it really wasn´t made clear as to why he was being deported. The DUI gave them reasonable cause, I guess. Not enough time has passed to apply for Crimincal Rehabilitation so I don´t know what other route to take to get him over to Canada for one week with me. I can´t get a hold of anyone at the Canadian High Commission in London...I fax them my details and they keep sending me the incorrect information. Not very helpful! And..we can´t afford a lawyer at this time..
So...any insight would be appreciate!
We would apply for Criminal Rehabilitation but it can cost between $200.00-$1000.00. Don´t want to spend that if it´s not the right application. What about Temporary Resident Visa??

Hi ya
I just wanted to let people know that The Canadian High Commission in London called me on my mobile today and answered all the questions I need to know. It is the application suggested in one of the replies that we need to send in. He is also sending me an application to request permission to re-enter Canada.
So...I think the future looks bright for my husband and I. All I have to say is BE PERSISTENT!!! I sent 3 faxes to a number in London....I finally got a response. Best way to go. Cheers
Li
