Subject: Miss my Japanese Girlfriend and she misses me
  Hello,

Just wondering what our options are. My girlfriend who I met in Victoria BC about 8 months ago had to return home after her 1 year working holiday visa expired. Within that time, we fell in love pretty deep. A true match that both of us had been looking for. Im 30 and she is 28. I was born and raised in Canada.
We were together 8 months though on paper, she had her own place and mailing address. She truly loves me and feels Canada would be a dream to start a life with me rather than me go there. But, we cant live with this long distance relationship forever as it is hard.

I would be sooo grateful to hear of my options. Marriage? Or what can be done. She didnt finish her university so she is not eligible for the " skilled worker" permanent resident visa.

any and all help would be huge. If I could get an email to correspond with as well, that would be great! Thanks so much

If you want to sponsor her to come to Canada as a permanent resident, then you essentially have two options. Get married OR qualify for common law status by living together for a minimum of one full year (and yes - you must be able to prove that you lived together for at least one year).

Start by reading here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse.asp

how would I go about getting married legally? would she have to come here on a three month visa and do it in that time? Or are there other legalities I should be aware of?

How can we live together for 1 full year when they are only granted a year in canada one time?

You can get married either here or in Japan. If she holds a passport from Japan - then I believe she can visit for six months without a visa (verify on the CIC site).

You can live together for one full year by applying for an extension to her visit.

Forgive me but does the above apply only to wishing for common law status? Or would we have to live together for a year also to marry?

So, japan is part of the visa exempt country list but as far as I can tell that only permits a 3 month stay.. Unless Im missing something... can this be confirmed?

So, marrying could take place within a visit?

Japan is TRV exempt = may be permitted up to a period of 6 months.
