I think you can volunteer for free. why will agency hire you when they can get volunteers for free.

Don´t listen to the stupid talk of anonymous. As soon as you get your PR, you can either take a 6 month program or 3 motnh program( it all depends on what field of social work you intend to work). If you want to be a social worker , that´s another story. However, I would recommend you to either take a program like: Community Support Workers. There are tons of opportunities in citis like Toronto, Vancouver, Alberta , etc. Your next option is to do some volunteer work in this field in order to acquire some experience, transfer your skills and apply to work in a community living organization. These kind of associations usually cater services for poeple with disabilities. There is a lot of work in this field and at times they may be willing to wave ciertain requirements as there´s a shortage of people willing to do this kinf of job.
Don´t give up or listen to people like anonymous.
Thank you

well, it´s not so untrue what anon stated. I had an american friend over here in Toronto from NY. She got a master´s degree in social science from NYU and couldn´t land a job during her 6 months stay in Canada. she mostly got refused because of her lack of ´canadian experience´. she even did some volunteering to get a foot into the door but it still didn´t work out for her. so she went back to the states.

canadian companies abuse volunteer workers... don´t do it. Go back to where you are. Western countries are facing deep recession.

"lack of ´canadian experience´" = Euphemism for "I don´t want to hire you"

It´s part of the package!

Since social workers have direct contact with vulnerable people and power over these peoples lives, their profession is licensed. There are some related positions which are not licensed but these generally do not pay well.

I am a born Canadian and have volunteered extensively to gain entry into my field, but it is very important to be strategic when doing this. Not all volunteer experience is equal and the people recruiting volunteers will ALWAYS tell you it leads to future opportunities. They are either misinformed or lying. For example, no volunteer work can lead directly to a social worker position since social work is licensed. Similarly, no legitimate organization in Canada should allow a volunteer to perform any volunteer work that is social work as this violates the regulations of that industry.

I hope you pursue your dream. Social work is a difficult career but I believe most people come to it for the right reason and that good social workers can make a positive contribution to our society.
