Subject: Starting a hairstudio with an artgallery.
I have over 17 years working expirience in advertising, illustrating and a completely different bussiness: A men´s hairstudio. The last ten years i have being painting a lot too. I´ve had some good exhibitians in the Netherlands. My artwork collection is still growing. (www.artworkmarc.nl)

I looking for opportunities to leave my country with my family and stop the succesfull hairstudio that i´m running for the last ten years.

Is there a real future in Canada for someone who´s planning to start a design-styled hairstudio with a small artgallery?

I work for a commercial shopping district so I can perhaps speak to this a little bit. Our area is very unique in that we have 25+ art galleries as well a numerous hair/spa salons. It is considered one of the most successful commercial areas in Vancouver. I am familiar with what it takes to be viable in the art gallery business and it is tough.

In Canada Hair Salons are very hard to sell because clientelle rarely stay with the location. You might be better renting a chair for a while until you build up your loyal clients and then move to your own location.

About the art gallery idea. I am not sure how chemical smells would enhance the art viewing experience unless you could find a way to separate the two areas. If you could find the right location it might be possible... but you might be better off finding a gallery that would exhibit your work.

Retail bussines is very hard right now, . If you already have a succesful bussiness in Netherlands, I would say don´t even bother coming to Canada. I do retail and I have some friends who have had Hair salons and they are having a hard time too. You have to find the right location wich may cost you an average of 4,000 or 5,000 dollars a month if you want to be in a busy area and of course depending the size of your premises. By the other hand an Art Gallery requires a right location too which means "you have to open it in a rich neighbourhood".
You can also open a bussines in a slow walking traffic neighbourhood (rent oscilates between 1500 and 2500 a month). But it will be very hard because you may see results after 3 or 5 years . Another factor that is important to consider:: Your bussiness can be going well but as soon as the bad weather hits(which is very likely to happen) the sales go down tremendously sometimes for over two weeks.

I never cease to run into strange situations! Maybe those situations find me or I have a knack to run into them! You clear say you want to shut down a successful business (which probably took years to build) and look for an unknown country/place and test your WHAT? If you can build again? Netherlands I visited before and loved the places. I can agree that some times we just can not stand the peace in our lives and seek trouble and uncertainty. What are you planning on accomplishing in Canada? Shave the damn Canucks bald and enjoy the sight of their hairlessness? I heard that Canucks have an inherited disposition to lose hair! Then what ya gonna shave? How about take a vacation when you have not much work there and just visit Canada, check out the place and return to the quiet living in Netherlands? This idea is far superior to putting yourself through the agony of wiping out what you have going there only to re-start the show all over again in a foreign land. A true thrill seeker might even venture into deadly parts of the world, such as Iraq and other war-torn areas.
