Subject: Parent sponsorship
  Hello experts!
I would appreciate your advice in my situation - I want to sponsor my mother and as far as I understand it´s a straightforward process, however a long one. So my problem is, how could I make my mom legally stay here in Canada, while the sponsorship application is being processed? She´s visiting me now and it would be painful to let her go back as she doesn´t have any family at the home country?
Thank you.

You can try extending her visitor visa. However it´s very unlikely that you will be able to keep extending her visa for the entire 5+ years it will take for her sponsorship to be approved.

I have known people whose parents came on visitor visa and stayed until they got their PR status. It took almost 3 yrs in past but they were lucky to get the extension so far.

You can try extending visa. Send the application through paper instead of sending it online, as online clearance happens in approximately 60 days while paper application takes 100+ days to clear, which will give 30 more day for your mom to stay with you. Her stay is legal until she hears back from CIC about the decision.

If you have any questions or concerns dont forget to post your question here.

Best luck,
Nisha

@Sharon
She´s an EU citizen and don´t need to apply to visa for a visit, so I believe it doesn´t affect those who have to apply for visa to come here.

@Nisha
Thanks!

you are missing the point of my comment. People come to this forum day after day angry with CIC because they decline a visitors visa for a parent - because they don´t think they will return home at the end of their visa. Required visa or no required visa, Mom can stay 6 months. Now Anonymous does not want to follow the rules. What happens if her sponsorship app is denied???????

Not following the rules/law encourages CIC to simply say NO when we want mom to come an visit.

They have good reason to say no... just has 226.98.240 has illustrated.

Actually, it´s you missing the point and not me - if you read my initial posting carefully, I´ve asked if there are any LEGAL ways to stay, if there are no legal ways, she´ll return.
So, please hold off your rhetorics for someone else.

It is sad to see longstanding member like Sharon being arrogantly presumptuous and accuse OP for having intention to break law when nowhere in his/her post suggests such. If she doesn´t even bother to read the post, she might as well keep her opinion to herself rather than making herself look like a complete ass.

get over yourselves - I read the post very carefully. The fact that 226.98.240 is even asking/contemplating that once Mom is in Canada, it is hard to send her home is the primary issue that I am speaking about. Did this consideration not come to light before Mom got on the plane to Canada? All of a sudden, is there no family in the home country?

All I am suggesting is this sudden realization that Mom can´t go home because of XYZ is the very same reason CIC turn down visitor applications.

just stating the facts for those who say CIC is soooo unfair.

Original poster -

Just because your mother doesn´t require a visa to enter Canada, doesn´t mean she can´t apply for an extension to her visit. So if she wants to stay more than six months, this is what she would do (i.e. this is the "legal" route). Once again, it´s extremely unlikely that she will be granted extension after extension to allow her to stay in Canada for the full 5+ years it will take to process her application.

Since she doesn´t require a visa to enter, she could also exit and enter the country from time to time to "reset" her six month visit. However she runs the risk of being refused entry at the border if they believe she has been spending too much time in Canada and is behaving more like a resident than a visitor.

So the short answer is that there are legal ways you can TRY to extent her visit. However there is no legal ways to GUARANTEE she can stay here for the entire period.

@Sharon : You are either being too assumptive or lacking in comprehension skill. Where did OP say the lack of family member is sudden realization?Does it ever occur to you that OP brought his/her mother in because he/she doesn´t want her to be alone anymore during painstakingly long processing time? And how do you know visa extension is the root of CIC rejecting visa to some people? It is legit avenue offered by CIC. They can reject to anyone whom they deem not eligible.

The only likely cause of rejection is, people submitting H&C or refugee application and jammed up the already burdened system. OP´s mother isn´t one of them.

It is not people extending visa that cause CIC to reject some application. It is those who apply H&C instead of applying from outside that CIC favors.
