Subject: change of marital status
  Hello

Myself and my husband applied for a permanent residence as common-law partners. We recently received the letter requesting us to send our passports, however, in the meanwhile we got married. We applied for the permanent residence together in the first place as common law partners so we have both gone through the whole procedure (exams etc). However we need to notify them of the change in marital status before sending the passports but since we only recently got married we do not have a marriage certificate yet (takes ten weeks and we got married early December). Since we only have 60 days to send our passports, we are not sure how to go about this. Does anybody know what the procedure is in this case?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Amalia

Send the License or the permission to marry some photos of the event etc.

The key is to inform them.

thanks but one more question (in reply to: change of marital status)
Thanks a lot for your reply Roy- it is greatly appreciated. The key question though is: do we send our passports within 60 days or not?

yes do send your passports... irregarless of whatever status is marked in your passport which i would presume is still under your maiden name. just send them and include a personal letter informing them of your marriage details along with pics, wedding invitation, receipts of wedding. do info them also that in your country it takes 4/5 weeks for the marriage to appear on your national statistics office... thus you cannot provide them with NSO original copies until available..however, you can send them certified true copies of your marriage contract..

Thank you very much for your help. Just for the record, our marriage took place in Toronto and it takes 8-10 weeks for the marriage to be registered.

Also the reason for our concern is that in the PR documents that we received it is stated explicitly that if a marriage has taken place after the last written communication (i.e. the medical exams), the passports should not be sent; instead first one has to send the proof for the marriage.

The tricky point is if they do not get back to you about the marital status change before the 60 days deadline for sending the passports has passed. In which case you don´t really know what has happened; they may be sending an extension of the due date soon but they may also have closed the application because you missed the due date.

In any case, we are going to send the marriage proof, wait for reply, and if we don´t hear anything from them, we will send the passports before the 60 days deadline.

Thanks a lot for your replies and have a happy New Year.
