Subject: Need help on canadian immigration please!
Hi i am a US citizen and my boyfriend is a canadian and i visited so far twice once i stayed for 2 months and other was for 6 and right now im looking into trying to live there permanently with him i had look at the information on the immigration site for cic and as embarrased to say and i feel stupid that i did not quite get it and seemed confusing.

So i was hoping to find some help here as to what would i need to do would it be easier to apply for a permanent visa over there in canada or would it be easier in the US? Keep in mind i really want it to be possible to be with him as it is hard to be apart from him.

Also if i applied for a perm visa could i be eligible to work there later on to support myself? and how long would i need to wait until i could work? please any help would be great thank you so much!

Hi Terra,

If your boyfriend is a Canadian Citizen then he can be with you in US and can sponsor you through Sponsorship - Spouse and common-law-spouse category, while staying with you. If he is a Permenant Resident he needs to be in Canada to sponsor you.

Outland application is a better way as it is faster in comparison to Inland application and you can appeal the decision in outland application case, which is not possible in Inland application.

Once you will become Permanent Resident through sponsorship, you will be able to work immediately after you receive your SIN card (which is a quick).

Hope this will help.

Best luck,
Nisha

Nisha failed to tell and as long as you qualify as a "Common Law". The boy-girlfriend thing means nothing when it comes down to sponsorship and permanent residence through family reunification.

Go to:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/spouse.asp

The process outside of Canada is faster and may take anywhere between 12 months to 36 months.

hmmm so would i need to be there with him in canada for him to sponsor me and would it be easier for me to get a permanent visa if we were married? Also i was checking on their site and it said something to like u need to have been in canada for a certain amount of days before applying does that mean i would have to visit over there so many times before i can apply for a permanent visa?

Hi Terra,

If you are married it would be easier for him to sponsor you.

You are not getting our point, if he will apply your sponsonship from your country it will be faster about 12-36 months in total as DocD has said, while if you come to Canada and then he applies its longer than that.

You dont need to be in Canada to apply for PR, nor you have to visit for getting PR. but yes you can apply for Visitor visa to meet him once in a while or same way he can come to see you in between your application processing time.

I think you are mixing getting PR and Renewing PR card. Dong get confuse. Marry him or show the proof that you are in common law relationship as DocD has suggested.

Best luck,
Nisha
