Subject: work permit / permanent resident
  Hi there,

I am in Canada with an open (case type 20, no employer no location required) 12 month work permit.
I have got 5 month left on my current work permit and I would like to immigrate into Canada. My research shows me, it all depends on a positive labor market opinion to get a work permit extension to stay in Canada and to start my skilled immigration.

My occupation is carpenter. I am (31) holding a German master-craftsman degree and a technician degree in constructional engineering. I have got 15 years of experience and I have top references from FRG, NZ, AUS.

I am living and working on Vancouver Island and I heard about other Germans trying to get a work permit extension but they had to leave the country because of a negative LMO. When I start a web job search in my trade, I am able to find 15-20 advertisements.

Is there a way around a LMO ?
I am trying to get a work permit for another 12 month (at least) to sort out my skilled immigration.
Can I extend my case type 20 permit ?
Does someone knows a hotline where I can talk to a (real) immigration officer who would know what I need to know ?

My research was based on a web search on the www.servicecanada.gc.ca site. I used the 1 800 O-Canada number which basically gave me links which I read already or another phone number 1888 2422 100. The second number is an automated service which is not giving the option to speak to an officer, unless you order mail applications for a work permit extension and type "0" in the very end of a 20 minute procedure, wait and hold the line for another 15 minutes. The officer was friendly and helpful but could not answer all my questions and asked me to stay on the phone while he transferred my call to another officer. 15 minutes later I gave up.

How to get a positive LMO?
and what can I do if there is no positive LMO?
Is it right that you only can get an appointment to speak with an officer in person when your immigration application is in process already ?

Thanks for your advice.

You can call Service Canada and talk to someone.

The number in Ontario is 416-954-3111 the number in BC can be obtained from 1-800-O-Canada

Any employer who wishes to hire a foreign national as a carpenter will have considerable difficulty at this time of year since the Construction Industry is not going full speed. The employer has to show that there are few PR´s or Canadian´s who can be employed and therefore permission is granted to hire a foreigner.

Thank you Roy,

DO you mean there is no chance to get a work permit here in BC ? or is more or less the decision of an immigration officer who would process my application ?

what else could I try to stay in the country until my residency is sorted... I even would not mind working up in Yukon or somewhere just to get a work permit. My skill level is above the "normal carpenter" because I worked in several countries and do welding, concreting, roofing ...all sorts of jobs.

Would you know areas where it is more likely to be welcome to work ?

Thanks for your help!

Fort McMurray, I am going to check that one out. Whats different with work permits or visa there ?

Well, 15 is legal age I started when I was 16. Its not that uncommon to start an apprenticeship and stick to your trade back home. Nothing wrong with traveling the world and trying different countries and jobs, better than staying home and doing the same things just on different days aye?

The good money in Oz is out bush, you will experience 45 C in 80 - 100% humidity, no wind. It drives you crazy within 14 days, I did it for 13 month at decided to freeze to death. Dont worry about snakes, small cuts and a simple ear infections let you go to a hospital in tropical climate, not snakes, you barely see them.

What do you think about
http://www.welcomebc.ca/wbc/immigration/come/work/about/strategic_occupations/skilled/application.page?

Do you got any experience with that program ? as far I found out it wont depends on a LMO that much because the province is looking after it.

Cheers for opinions
