Subject: Do You think Canada is right place for you?
Hi everyone, me and my wife was thinking to immigrate to Canada but after all stories we heard, we are not sure if Canada right place for us. we are from eastern Europe European Union, I´m a doctor and my wife is a university professor. we are not making a lot of money as people like us in Canada, but we can afford to have a nice house and send our kids to good school.
What we heard about Canada that doctors driving taxis and women with university diplomas cleaning people houses, is it true? Kids in public school are get hooked on drugs. What we like about Canada that is low crime compared to United States, and healthcare also is good.
We calculated our chances to succeed in immigration to Canada, and we are sure we can get through.
So after when we will get our landed immigrants paper, we have to start everything all over again. our diplomas are not recognized in Canada, so we cannot work in our fields.so what´s the point to have university diploma? To drive a taxi.
I think Canadian immigration not telling the truth about life and situation in Canada.

Do You think Canada is right place for you? could you be wrong?

CIC is in changer of providing and processing applications.

Immigration is a personal choice, if it works for you, GREAT! IF it doesn´t, you know where the airport is.

Since when CIC has to provide economy reports to prospective immigrants?

Do that research yourself before making the decision of immigrating to Canada.

Disagree with above post. It is, in fact, the responsibility of the host country in inviting immigrants to post and make well known the country´s labor and economic prospects, statistics, and situation. This is especially true for the skilled positions the government is seeking to fill. Most, if not all, industrialized countries do this for the prospective immigrants they seek.

Regarding the original poster´s concern. Yes, it is certainly valid, and it is wise to be thinking about this now rather than arriving wide-eyed and naive to a situation more difficult than anticipated. There are many stories and television documentaries describing professionals, often with advanced degrees, arriving in Canada and only finding menial work (office cleaning, taxi driving, etc.) Many of these immigrants simply pack up and move back home with financial loss and expenses to themselves.

From a non-Canadian´s opinion and impression, newly arrived professionals with sought-after degrees and experiences may indeed encounter difficulties in the system. It is a very Canadian-first hierarchy, with immigrants often hired only if no other Canadians are available. This is probably due to the relatively small population competing for scarce employment positions during difficult economic times (Canada and world-wide). Immigrants are not yet considered equal and often are seen as second category (as in most countries.

So, even though you may be a very good, qualified physician, not only must you take and pass qualifying medical exams again, you may still not be guaranteed employment in your profession. However in your case, I´d say this is not likely, since the health care system in Canada is severely lacking in medical providers across all specializations, especially in small towns and more remote regions.

I´d advise to try to find and contact medical professional groups/organizations and a few well-know universities in Canada who may be able to provide first-hand information and guidance (for both of you), and what´s required by the bureaucracy to succeed in the system. Suggest doing more research before making a decision.

If Canada selling their product(drug) which is immigration, the people who is interesting to buy it this(drug), they have a rights to know whole information about this product and if any possible side affects . Not just to sell to everyone without responsibilities.
If You don´t like it here, you know where the airport, that is very unprofessional answer DocD

Immigration has become a business now.... don´t believe in advertising.... My family and I have the Canadian PR Cards.... we just threw them to the trash bin. Nice Family, stay where you are, that´s my advice.
However if you do insist in moving, just remember what I say. Good luck.

Richard,

A federal website is not a feedback website. The success of every immigrant arriving to Canada is very subjective.

There are over 240,000 immigrants arriving in Canada every year. Is every new immigrant driving a cab? Is it everyone having a hard time finding a job? heck no!

Our unemplyment rate is about 7.6% and our population is a little over 30,000,000. So you do the math. Take out of the equation all the different groups that don´t work (i.e children, retired etc) do the 7.6% and add the number of immigrants that have arrived in the last 5 years?

IT DOESN´T ADD! So when I read the "horror" stories of the ugly Canada not telling the prospective immigrants what the situation is, it is nothing but silly.

Topo,
I am very glad that you are SO sure that I have nothing to do with Customs and Immigration.

I don´t believe in statistics.... they are made just to support some campaigns and to satisfy the politicians. I believe more in the FACTS, what happens among the immigrants community, which I was in for 6 months.
For Canadians of course you don´t know what it likes and feels because you ARE NOT there. You just simplify things, create poor and stereotype judgment.

The best think about Canada is that once you become a Canadian citizen you can pretty much cross the border into the USA as you wish. If you have the academic credentials and desire the work hard you will succeed. This is not true in Canada particularly for immigrants. I lived in Canada for 8 years and it was hell.. I was literally going crazy trying to find a decent job.. Three months after I arrived in the USA I got a great job and everything since then has been great. Good luck.
