Subject: 1 way ticket to Canada-no fixed itinerary
  Hi folks,

I am English and have booked a ticket to Calgary for 01st May 2011.

I am taking an open-ended break from work, therefore i didnt book a return flight yet.

I do not intend to overstay the 6 month maximum for a tourist, but I am becoming rather concerned with the hearsay and things I read regarding Canadian immigration policy.

I wish to land in Calgary, explore the Jasper/Banff region and backpack with no fixed agenda in an Easterly direction, staying in budget accommodation and hostels.

I will take around £4-£5,000....to cover my expenses during my stay(will this be enough to convince the authorities)

I plan to either fly from Halifax-Nova Scotia to London, or hop over the border to the U.S. and fly from there.

I welcome all feedback, including potential stumbling blocks with my travel plans.

Steve

Get a return ticket even if it is an open ticket or a ticket with no penalties that you can change dates around.

Otherwise you are risking of being refused of entry at the port of entry.

No agenda no return ticket, no work, how can you prove that you are indeed going to leave Canada at the end of your visit?

Proving my intentions (in reply to: 1 way ticket to Canada-no fixed itinerary)
I take your point.

However, I can produce a letter from my employer stating that i need to return by a certain date.

I must say, as an UK national, well travelled in Europe, i find it bizarre that as soon as i plan a trip to another continent I am to be subjected to this amount of scrutiny. I only want to visit the place!....not invade ;-)

Thanks again...Steve

Take your letter and read it when they send you right back from the Calgary airport.

Get a return ticket it is cheaper than a one way and you can change the date of return.

Enjoy the Black Flies north of Lake Superior.

Flying home from Halifax may be possible but it is no major hub.

Take DocD´s advice SERIOUSLY

Well thanks...i´ve already bought the outward ticket, so will have to get a return now.
Do you have any idea just how much cash I will need to have in my bank account to satisfy the authorities that i can support myself for say 5 months in Canada??

Canadians, as ready and willing as they are to lick British Royal arse at the drop of a hat and pay them dearly whenever they visit, seem to have this schezchophrenic mindset when it comes to British nationals... But don´t ask me why. I would say it have something to do with their ill-developed brain cells! LOL By the way, i am a Canadian... and can´t make sense of this behavior. Personally I have great trust and respect for the British Nationals than those damned Royals any time of the day.

Well, I belive that canadians are less fond of the royal family as the Brits are. The Royal family rips you off and you still take a bow before them. Good for you! Then you blame americans for being dumb! At least they are not stuck in the past like you are.

before you toss the queen too far, take a good hard look how much money she brings into the British economy as a result of tourism. I suspect the whining general public is ahead of the game.
