Hi, I am an international student studying in Canada. My sponsor fell terribly ill so that affected my finances .
As a result I could not enroll for one semester so I decided to work and try to get money myself so as to return to school the following semester. I had applied for and received my work permit before then.
So I started working when I should be in school. 12 days into my work as a grocery store stocker I get my statement of earnings from my employer . To my greatest surprise and dismay I earned $0 because it was claimed that my "VISA EXPIRED´.
I was told the government had taken up to 90 percent of my due earnings because my visa had expired. But my work visa will expire by 2014. 3 years from now.
What should I do? Thanks in advance.

(in reply to: ''VISA EXPIRED'' on statement of earnings) How big was that fish that got away?
Come on tell us another funny story!
Your an International student and you have a sponsor and not a parent paying the bills?
The Canadian government took your money LOL
You applied for work and had to provide a valid SIN number and got paid 12 days after starting work LOL
You came here as a student and failed to attend school and got 0$ and you believe what someone told you that the government took your money.
Stop it - come on, my sides are splitting from LOL
You got a three year work permit?????

(in reply to: ''VISA EXPIRED'' on statement of earnings) The government will not take 90% of your earnings. Even if you had an expired visa. The consequences would different.
Your story doesn´t make any sense. Either you are missing something here or your employer is doing something not quite legal.

(in reply to: ''VISA EXPIRED'' on statement of earnings) The story may refer to a situation where a person with an expired study permit had an employment with a valid work permit (with or without SIN provided) may not get paid because of his or her loss of status in Canada.
