Subject: Career adjustment of immigrant women in Canada?
  Hi all,

I moved to Canada fairly recently and I have been interested in credentialing problems and what happens to people´s careers when they move to Canada. As I was going through some statistics and studies, it looked like the situation of immigrant women is quite different from immigrant men. I then built my M.A Thesis in this topic.

I would like to invite people in this forum (women in particular) to participate in the study as I think the topic is really important and will help a lot to tailor programs and services for immigrants.

I am interested in finding either why the situation is different or dispelling the myth of the difference if this turns out to be the case.
My study is done via on-line questionnaire which can be accessed at http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/425942/Career-Adjustment-Model-Questionnaire-for-Immigrant-Women.

All information is collected anonymously and kept strictly confidential. The study has been approved by the ethics of University of Saskatchewan.

I am looking forward to the diverse responses women from different cultural and professional backgrounds can offer.

Cheers,
Jana

Hi Jana,

One main hurdle comes for the young women, which so many women have faced after landing in Canada, is that women is generally emotionally and financially dependent on the spouse (Men),

1. if she is unmarried and young, employer find its a risky situation as she will choose her life partner and will move to different city and wont be available to work so if they go through hiring process, its a tedious, expensive and lengthy process.

2. If she is young and married, she can go on maternity leave any time and again employer is without the source to run their business and again have to go through the hiring process which is tedious, expensive and lengthy.

3. Some of the profession or job are men dominating, so if the employer hire women in that department, they tend to move out faster so again its triggering hiring process.

4.Women are more attached to the families emotionally and kids are dependent on mothers more (exceptions are always there) so she needs to take days off more compared to Men.

5. If the Men moves to another city the family generally follows and women has to go with the family if she wants to keep the family together, so again she is the one who is sacrificing her career for family, but employer doesnt want to go through the hiring process again and again.

6. Sometimes contacts and luck also plays an important role.

7. Emotionally its hard for women to keep up in politics of the offices.

I have heard this excuse from the boss of particular dept. in few companies as they are my friends, but this type of situation might be playing a key role.

Hope this will be able to help a little bit.
