Subject: Wife Has PR But.....
I sponsored my wife about 3 years ago (in-land sponsorship) she finally has PR status in Canada now. My question is... My wife is %100 deaf in both ears, and she has been looking for work but is finding it extremely hard to find anything. Can she go on disability or social services at least until she can find a job? She has joined CHS(Canadian hearing society) and uses their job programs, but even they told her it is hard to find work as a deaf person and to think about going to Ontario works, but I´m just unsure if she is legally able to. Please let me know if she can or cannot and the reasons why. Thank you

Sincerely,
Kevin MacKinnon

Three years passed.

You may go ahead with social assistance or welfare.

She has been living in Canada with me for more then 3 years but has only recently got PR status. Does she need to be a PR for three years before she can get disability or some kind social assistance

You will be financially responsible for her social assistance meaning that you will have to pay back to the government.

So what your saying is that if my wife gets ODSP or social assistance now it is illegal and the government will make me pay them back. She has had PR for only 2 months, so we will have to wait 3 years before she can legally get assistance ? Even though she has a disability that is really preventing her from finding a job?

If I were you I would go and ask at the office itself Im sure they would give u a definate answer.Because your situation is different your wife has a disability it (MIGHT)
be considerd.

Normally you would be responsible for her three years after she recieves her PR

don´t count on it.

as a taxpayer, you took advantage of Canadian hospitality and applied inland. You have been supporting her,I assume, during that time. You signed an undertaking with the government that you would provide for her.

Now, the ink has barely dried on her PR documents and you are looking for taxpayer support (disability and social services are TAXPAYER support)

I empathize with her struggles, but I certainly do not like the notion that we should be assisting you in supporting your wife after a few months of status.

You think your the only person who pays taxes here , around 35 million Canadians and PRs pay taxes every year.Your accusing this man of taking advantage of the tax payer because he showed support and love to his wife and sponsored her to stay with him.I would agree with you only if she wasnt deaf but dont you think that you should accuse people who are taking real advantage of the system ?? like the ones that are on walefare without any reason ?? just because they are too lazy to work or even look for work at least this man is trying !!!!

being deaf is not reason enough to disqualify her from residency and it is likely not sufficient reason to be qualified for disability pension. Is it tough to find a job - yes, but Kevin knew that the day he sponsored her. This should come as no surprise and should have been part of his considerations when he signed the undertaking agreement.

He has been supporting her until now, (as it was illegal for her to work until her PR was complete) Now all of a sudden they are looking for income assistance while she looks for work????

What does that sound like to you?

Dear Sharon

Before you start judging my wife and I, you should really learn to know the full story first. We have lived together in Canada for almost 4 years now. Before she was granted PR she went to school and when she graduated we paid for a work permit for her. She has been trying to get a job for the last 3 years. We are by no way taking advantage of taxpayers, me being one myself. I´m sure just like in any marriage it is hard to only have one source of income. All we are looking for is a little financial support. I knew from the very start that I´m financially responsible for my wife, and have been and will continue to be. But if you truly knew my wife and saw how hard she worked going to school and doing volunteer work, you might not be so quick to judge. Thanks for your supporting comment DE.
