Subject: Offered $24K to sign marriage certificate |

My 21 yr old daughter was asked by her upstairs landlord to sign a marriage certificate to marry one of the landlord´s relatives so they could enter Canada as a spouse in exchange for $25,000 cash. My daughter called me to ask me if this was illegal and what were the consequences of doing something like this.
Of course I told her it was illegal and NOT to sign anything! I am having trouble finding any clear info about this sort of thing online. Is this something we should be reporting the Canadian Immigration? I don´t want to put my daughter in any kind of danger. I´m so glad she is moving out of there in 10 days!

(in reply to: Offered $24K to sign marriage certificate) Well I don´t really care if you don´t buy it. I was just curious if anyone knew how I could report it. My daughter is only 21 and is newly out on her own (living with roomates) She called me for advice because she wasn´t sure how to respond to such an offer. She wasn´t even really sure what they were asking her for. I´m sure you were very worldly and knew everything at the age of 21. I´m so happy for you.
Big deal, I made a typo in the subject title. It should have said $25k- so shoot me. You´ve never had a typo?
BTW- just in case you didn´t know. Calling 911 is for life threatening emergencies. It´s idiots like you that call them asking about immigration issues. I think my method is probably a better use of resources.
Thanks for the links from the earlier replies. I will be contacting them tomorrow to make a report. These people told my daughter that a previous tenant of theirs took them up on the offer already. Hopefully reporting them will at least put them on the future radar for fraud.

(in reply to: Offered $24K to sign marriage certificate) Chinese will pay $45,000.00 so why are they offering your daughter so little?
Your 21 year old daughter does not use the Internet but asks you what to do.
Strange story.

(in reply to: Offered $24K to sign marriage certificate) Roy- why do you think it´s a strange story? Personally, I think it´s a bit odd that they would make an offer like that to a virtual stranger- pretty risky- but I guess if they are willing to commit fraud they don´t really care who does it for them.
Are you suggesting my daughter should shop around for a higher offer?
This forum is really strange! I come here for advice and I get people telling me my story isn´t real.
Whatever!!
