Hi
I am a new immigrant from Pakistan settled in Brampton two weeks ago. Back in Pakistan my two daughters (born 2003 and 2004) has completed grade 4 and grade 2 and were promoted to next grades in July 2011.(both of them had enrolled in school at the age of 2.5 years), both were studying in one of the best available school system in Pakistan (Beacon House School System) where both of them were position holders in their classes. Both of them have a very good communication as well as reading and writing skills in English.
The staff at ´Welcome Canada´ has guided us to ´Ridgeview Elementary School´ Brampton; where my daughters were enrolled in Grade 3 and 2 according to their age as per law of the ´Peel District School Board´, my kids will have to again appear to the ´Welcome Canada´ on Sep 20th, 2011, where an assessment will be made about their grades.
My both kids are very much disturbed, even became psychologically ill, due to their degradation. They feel that they are far much step ahead as compared to their classmates here, after attending the school for few days, and they should be in higher grades. And if this is not possible then we should return to Pakistan.
My question is
Is there any possibility, by appealing to ´Peel District School Board´ or any other method/procedure, that my daughters can be enrolled in higher grades. Is the Age vs Grade law so rigid that kids will become psycologically ill. Is there no advantage for the kids with extra talents and intellect.

what sort of pressure are you placing on your children that they would become psychologically ill? Is the problem your 10 year old child´s or is it the overly ambitious parent?
Canadian schools look at numerous factors when placing children in a school grade - their cognitive abilities and how much of the curriculum they have mastered, their english skills, and their social skills.
If your children are truly gifted, the teachers will make sure they are kept stimulated and challenged. If they get into the school year and everyone determines that they should be advanced further, I am sure it will happen. Nothing worse than pushing a child farther and faster than they can cope with.

My daughter were born in 2004 and she is in grade 2. She is very smart and ahead of some of the kids in her class. Your kids will be just fine if they are that smart you dont need to worry.

What makes you think that you can judge this father as if you knew. Do you really think that immigrants are retarded to not see things for what they are?
There is a terrible sense of entitlement in this country and you very well know that people are downgraded from the word go.

these kids have been here 2 weeks. I would say the same thing to ANY parent that judges a system after 60 hours of instruction

If you want them in grade 4 & 2 respectively, then go to private school. they will accommodate them. Since public schools go by age, grade, ability and curriculum they had in previous grade.
My daughter were in private school till grade 2 & 3. But when i transferred them to public school they put them one grade behind, because of their age. Withing the next 6 months they were promoted in next grade, because they were well ahead in their classes.
So don´t worry and stop panicking.
