Subject: Drywall jobs in B.C
I am currently in the process of immigrating to Canada from the U.K. I am a drywall installer and suspended ceiling fixer with 16 years experience. I am educated to high school level. I have not completed any courses for my trade, I was taught on site and that is how i learned my trade, I am fully competent in all aspects of my trade.

Do you need to have completed courses to gain employment in Canada?

How much is the average salary for drywall installers?

I would be grateful if anyone could give me any advice.

Regards
Stuart

No Just need a work permit

I work in construction BC/Alberta and you should be able to get $20-30/h

that $20-30 would be on wages for a company. Working as a sub contractor $30-40/h

I am thinking the salary range may be a little rich but that might depend on your expertise.

Hi Sharon, I am fully competent in all aspects of my trade. I am currently using Goldman Associates law firm and recruitment agency to handle my immigration. They said I should get $34 an hour but i´ve been looking on some sites and as Pete said some firms are paying nearer the $20 an hour mark. Just a bit wary now because the least I would want would be $30 as my partner wouldn´t be able to work straight away as we have 2 young girls and she would need her child care dimploma converted into one that was recognised in Canada

nothing more precious than a good dry-waller and taper! I used to build houses so I say that in all honesty.

Economy in Canada is better than the UK but, the current situation is pointing to a double dip recession. Renovations and housing starts are not particularly strong. Consistent steady work may be a challenge.

That said, if you are good, your are gold so it will be a matter of hooking up with a company that knows your worth.

The company I work for starts unskilled labourers at about $20/h. And it´s hard to find people who really want to work. Of the last four labourers hired. They just stopped showing up to work after a week or two. The last guy started the last week of July. Called work to say he was sick and needed all of August off. So my boss said ok as it was hard to find a worker. Then this turkey had four sick days in the first two weeks back so my boss fired him.

Any my work place is non stressfull and we have to option to work overtime and make really good $$$$$. Last year we got so busy my boss paid everyone overtime rates for the last 6 weeks of the year for every hour worked.Plus we work lots of OT. I took home $12,000 after tax for 6 weeks work!

If you want to make $30/h then I would head to Alberta. You should be able to get it!

Pete, may I suggest you are the exception rather than the rule out there? Are you in Northern BC/Alberta?
