Subject: Sponsoring my boyfriend, getting married...
Hi, Currently I´m a permanent resident in Canada living in Manitoba and i would be applying for Canadian Citizen next year. I have a boyfriend in the Philippines, we´re planning to get married, and have him come to Canada so that we could be together. But, I´m still a student in Canada and I´m in student loan, maybe a 2 years or more after finishing my studies we´re planning to get married, but that would take a long time, my question is, if we get married right away, can i sponsor him now as my spouse to live in Canada? I´m worried about my financial aspect, cause I´m on student loan, and still need to repay that, would that affect my sponsorship eligibility? What would be the best approach that you could recommend me? Because we want to be with each other as soon as possible, and i know sponsorship would take a month or year but, i don´t want it to be too long, just because I´m lack the requirements. And, another thing, do we need to be living w/ each other at least a year to be approved for spouse immigration? Thank You! =)

You can marry your bf now & you can also start the sponsorship.

Having a student loan does not prevent you from sponsoring it is only if you are on welfare

For spousal applications there is no financial requirement as in minimum income, however immigration would still need to know how you intend to afford to take care of yourself & your spouse without ending up be a burden on the government. So you would need to address that.

If your husband (when you marry) has certain skills or education that will make him marketable in Canada you can include that in your application (not a requirement but may help).

One requirement that you have to send withthe application is an Option C which tells them how much you made in the last tax yr & will give them an idea of your ability to support your husband if the need arises.

I hope this helps & if anyone wants to add or clarify please feel free to do so

No you do not have to be living with him a year if you are married in order to sopnsor

Living with him for a year would be if you intend to apply as common-law
