The Netherlands is proposing tests for immigrants to prove that they understand the language and culture of the country. The test would require 350 hours of study and cost $580.

The idea is that immigration applicants would know about the country before they arrived so they would be prepared.

What do you think of this idea for Canada?

Great idea, but not for all categories. I think this would work fine for skilled worker class. In addition to other requirements, skilled worker class applicants should be asked to write at least 2 page SOP (Statement of purpose) explaining reason for immigration and how they plan to contribute towards Canadian economy. When we apply for a business school, we are asked to do the same. Selection criteria of schools are not only based on GMAT or TOEFL scores but also on how we see our future. If there is a common vision, one should be accepted. Doing Master´s or PhD doesn´t make one superior. If we don´t have clear vision of what we want to achieve in life and how go for it, we will never succeed in venture of our life. Higher degree of academic qualification is good but in practical life it´s the skills that make us achieve what we want. Just crying that Canada doesn´t have jobs in IT or other traits is wrong. First we should honestly assess how good are our skills and do we match the market needs. Working 5-10 years in US or in any other developed country doesn´t give us certificate that we have all required skills. People in my network got very good jobs in Canada without any problem because their objectives were very clear and well planned. Their skill sets were brushed up to meet requirements of any job market.
I my opinion a test for skilled worker class applicants is a good idea. I don´t have my PR yet but if asked to write what I suggested, I am ready for it. Are you?????

Me too, support! Do you think students who past their thesis in Canada would afraid of writing proposal? I am not showing off, I understand Canadian stuff more than my own native country, because live here for a while. I read global and mail, Vancouver Sun everyday when I have coffee break. I love reading Read Digest too, that??s my favor pocket books when I am waiting for appointment in the clinic with kids or waiting for pick up day care.
Well, if you love something, you will eager to understand that. Like me, I love living in Canada, I will try my best to understand stuff over here.

Basically I have my plan in Canada too. When I graduated and found job, the first day, I went to talk to my financial advisor and open RRSP (Registered Retire Saving Plan).
PS: Sharon, do you still have RRSP, I think March 1 is the last day to purchase it, better have one when you are young. I deducted CPP, EI, Federal income tax every my paycheck, just exactly same as anybody else here. If CIC asked me about economic establish question. I have already done that.
I really think for those people who have job in Canada and pay income tax, should simplified our applying processing, even inland process not outside country, too long waiting time, anyway, learn to appreciate.

My five years goal maybe landed first and have property if possible, considered family issues and job opportunities so far, I simply can??t relocate, hey guys, why don??t we discuss your future plan in Canada?

For finding job, I think connection is super super important no matter which counties you will go. Making friends just simply tell them you need job; show your advantage will help too. I live in a small town, I hang out with all my friends in the university, after they have done their universities, lots of them working on the island. You can say that is network. They help me a lot. Talk to the right person, don??t always stay home and hang out with friends.

Strange experience, when I was high school back in Asia, I don??t have lots of friends. Groups of people at school hate me a lot. I am so direct person and don??t like kiss ass, or kind of individual type, I have my own idea all the time never obey groups. I made a lot of friends in Canada. I found I was involved by lots of organization, what a funny culture. Different from lots of immigrants, the first day I came to Regina Saskatchewan. I didn??t even feel lonely, I felt myself, and individual simply got other peoples recognized.

Orientation program is an excellent idea. However it is best to have it during the first few weeks of landing in your new country as in case of orientation programs of new university you come to or any company you join.

I mean the idea is for migrants to ask questions - what will they ask about something they have never seen or observed?

I think one of the biggest reasons immigrants are disatisfied with Canada is that they do not really know what they are in for. All they know is the chance to make more money and have steady employment and free medical. (I am sure this is not totally true but I certainly get that impression at times)
I think it is valuable for prospective Canadians to understand our attitudes about gay marriage, the separation of church and state, our weather, cultural integration, rights of women... Quebec, those sorts of things.
