Subject: status change, sponsor a spouse
  Hi everyone,

I´d like to ask to help regarding sponsoring my spouse. I came here in Canada as a landed immigrant in 2008. I went back home this year (2012) and got married. I would like to sponsor my husband so we can be together here in Canada. My questions are:

1. Do I ned to change my status ? If I do, where and how?

- I have checked that CRA has a form for change in marital status. Where else do I need to have my status changed?

2. Per my understanding, you don´t necessarily have to change your surname here in Canada once you get married. I would like to do so, but my application for citizenship is already in process. If I don´t change my surname, will that impact my application for sponsorship for my spouse?

Help! Thank you in advance.

1. You only need to change your status on the CRA form. You don´t need to notify anyone else.

2. No - you don´t have to change your surname to sponsor and this won´t affect your application to sponsor your spouse.

Status Change! (in reply to: status change, sponsor a spouse)
Hi,

I´m in Vancouver with my visitor visa and I am living with my boyfriend who is international student here.
He applied for PR (BC pnp - Graduate Pilot Program) and his process is in its final stage. he even did his medical about one month ago.

We want to get married and then he can apply PR for me. We consult with 2 lawyers about our situation and they suggested us 2 different things:

1.We wait until he gets his PR, then he applies for me. meanwhile I need to renew my visa (it´ll finish in less than 2 months)
2.we get married as soon as possible so he can add me to his case, which lets me stay here with him and also get my PR even faster.

No we got confused because these are totally opposite and to do one of them, will ruin the other one.
So can you please help us in this case? It´s kind of urgent and important.
Thanks a lot

Sponsorship (in reply to: status change, sponsor a spouse)
I was going through the information provided on CIC´s website and I have a few questions.

1) According to the Sponsorship Guide provided on the CIC website:
If you are a Canadian citizen, you may sponsor a spouse, a common-law partner or conjugal partner, or a dependent child who has no children of his or her own. However, you must demonstrate that you will live in Canada when the sponsored person becomes a permanent resident.

Note: Permanent residents residing abroad may not sponsor from outside of Canada. Canadian citizens travelling as tourists are not considered to be residing abroad.

QUESTION: Does this mean if I am a Canadian Citizen and a Permanent Resident who is currently residing and employing outside of Canada, I do not need to be employing or living in Canada during the application process since I am a "Canadian citizen"?

But how can I demonstrate I will live in Canada when my sponsored person becomes a permanent resident?

2) According to the CIC website:
In order to sponsor, you must¡K
prove that you have sufficient income to provide basic requirements for your spouse or common-law partner¡¦s dependent children. To do this, you must provide documents showing your financial resources for the past 12 months. This requirement applies only when dependent children who have dependent children of their own are included on the application.

QUESTION: If neither my spouse or I have any dependent children, is there still a minimum necessary income requirement which the sponsor would have to meet?

Thank you!

ODS application (in reply to: status change, sponsor a spouse)
Hi,
Could you please help me understand, if my Canadian spouse receive the support from ontario disability , can it hinder my application for citizenship because my spouse would be no longer capable of supporting me and the children. How this ODS affects our permanent resident status....Can we be deported because of the disability? Thank you for the help.

Jean
