Subject: Travelling without a Visa
Is there anyone out there that can answer the following question: I have Mexican Citizenship, therefore, I don´t need a Visa to enter Canada. Is it possible to apply for a work permit or permenent residence once in Canada?

I think you can do it. Actually, I am surpised how many Mexicans are willing to risk their lives crossing the dessert (south border) when they can enter Canada and try to access the US from the less guarded borders with (northern border) Canada.

Yijie,

Inded Mexicans do not need visa to visit Canada. Look for yourself, this is the list of countries that starts with the letter M whose citizens require visa, and as you can see Mexico is not there.

Were I Mexican and wanted to illegally immigrate to the US, I would choose to visit Canada first and then move to the US through a not too protected site, just like the one you encountered when you were driving a week ago.

Yijie:: You have no idea of what you say...There´s all kinds of mexicans , and just like in China not everybody is working for 25 cents an hour, right??Mexicans who cross the border to the US have to pay approximately U.S. 3,000 to a person who will deliver them in the other side of the border. They sell their lands or work really hard to get that money because they think the US offers a better future for them and their families.
If you pay a flight from Mexico to Canada you pay roughly 1,000 canadian dollars...
By the other hand former Minister of Immigration Judy Sgro was fostering the idea of openning more canadian consulates in Latin America because they want to have more immigrants from Latin America (they get adjusted faster to the Canadian culture than asians, East Indians, etc as she stated).
Mexico as well is part of the NAFTA , that´s why mexicans don´t need a visa to visit Canada.

Absolutely,

Think about it, you pay $1000 with a roundtrip, no hassle, just find the point where you drove one week ago. They save $2000, plus they don´t risk their lives! They only have to find that point where the border is not heavily patrolled... Once inside the US they can work for a period of time, return to CANADA, and then take the outbound plane to Mexico, with cash in their hands!!!

Of course, eventually Canada Border Agency and Homeland Security, will figure it out, by at least they could have exploited such window that is available right now.

Buena Suerte

Hey Fish, pretty good spanish! and you are right about those people paying 3,000 usd to get into US, the issue is that those people are kind of very low-studied people and unfortunately they don´t look farther that what the "coyotes" tell them and they get scammed. Unfortunately, they can´t do as Ozz sugests, because they don´t even have a passport, and of course, they don´t have means to look at this forums.
Luis Andres:
you can go to Canada without a visa, though you will need to have a passport.
Regarding the work permit, it is allowed under the nafta rules, but you have to have a job offer, and this job will have to fit those listed on the corresponding nafta annex. this work permit will grant you only temporary residence.
Regarding the PR, you need to apply from Mexico (I´m assuming you are mexican by birth), unless you do a family thing as Fish says.
I´m a mexican applying for PR. If you have any farther questions, just ask.

Antonio

Ni le hice caso a ese asiatico. Gracias por responder mi pregunta. Regarding that thought of travelling to the US via Canada is complicated. You have to satified the Canadian Officer in order to enter.

you may not need a visa as a Mexican to enter Canada but you must still satisfy a customs officer about the nature of your visit and that you have adequate funds to support yourself. He has every right to deny you entry. That is true for any visitor.

It is not a big deal .. (in reply to: Travelling without a Visa)
Coming from Mexico is not a big deal for immigration.. They ask few questions like how long do you intend to stay in Canada?? How much money are you bringing??(not necesarily). Very important is to bring an addresse with you and a round-trip ticket....Don´t let people scare you!!!By the other hand I´ve noticed that the kind of mexicans that come to Canada are not the kind of mexicans that go to the US (in general terms). They usually are holding university degrees and they come here for different reasons.
La tipa que puso el mensaje anterior es otra que siente que lo sabe todo. A su amante le han negado la visa pero porque viene de un pais super super tercermundista.
