Subject: self-employed musician permanent residence? |

Hi guys,
A newbie in the forum here. A little bit of my background: I graduated with a Bachelor degree in music from York U, and now I have a post graduation open work permit until August 2013.
Right now I´m self employed as a musician and guitar teacher. I´m wondering if anyone here has any experience or know anything about applying Permanent Residency under self-employed category as a musician. The requirements in CIC website are pretty loose, such as "self-employed activity", "participation in world class cultural activities". I have a hard time understanding these and trying to figure out how to prove my self-employment and my involvement in musical activities.
Another thing, can you guys recommend any lawyer/law firm in Toronto that has a good reputation in self-employed application? I already talked to a couple that said they can help me, but I´m not 100% sure. I just don´t want to get scammed and ripped off. It´s quite a lot of money.
Thank you

(in reply to: self-employed musician permanent residence?) Are you regarded as one of the top guitar players in the world or in your country? If so, then you have a shot. If not, then I don´t think there´s any chance you´d qualify.
Your best bet is to find a skilled job and an employer - and then apply through Canadian Experience Class once you have one year of full time skilled work experience in Canada.

(in reply to: self-employed musician permanent residence?) Your going about it the wrong way. Why on earth would you apply under self-employed??????
"Getting Ripped Off" what due diligence did you do when selecting a couple of Law Firms which you claim you spoke with?
Please read this.

(in reply to: self-employed musician permanent residence?) becausee... I am a self employed, so I thought I might have a chance. Looks like everybody think that self employed category is hard to get. Anybody has any experience or know someone who got rejected in this category? Please share if you don´t mind, so I have a concrete idea of how hard it is to get.
I know about CEC, and I am currently applying for lots and lots of jobs for this option. I just want another option, just in case I can´t a good enough job (NOC A,B). Since I´m already doing music for years, I´m researching for possibilities to get the PR under self-employed.
For the lawyer/law firm, I try my best to find out who they are before I hire one of them (education, experience, affiliation, testimony, reviews, etc). I don´t think I need it if I apply through CEC or FSW, but for self employed category, I really need help, just like I explained in my first post.
Thanks again for your feedback!!

(in reply to: self-employed musician permanent residence?) Your eligible under CEC so why would you even consider self-employed. If you´re REALLY famous musician or a gold medal athlete then apply under self-employed.

(in reply to: self-employed musician permanent residence?) because although I´m keep on trying, I might not be able to get a job that satisfy the NOC level, because of my field of study.
Again, do you have any experience in applying under self-employed or know anyone who does and got either accepted or rejected? just want an example...

(in reply to: self-employed musician permanent residence?) People are like fruit but like fruit an Apple taste quite a bit different than an Orange.

(in reply to: self-employed musician permanent residence?) Very few qualify under self-employed. Consequently I think it´s unlikely you´re going to see a response here from someone who has applied themselves and has first hand experience.
IMO - you don´t qualify under self-employed. But if you feel strongly about trying - by all means go ahead. Keep in mind that the processing time for these applications is several years.

quite disappointing process (in reply to: self-employed musician permanent residence?) As, visual artist, with more than 10 years experience, making a living from art, and having exhibited in several places in Europe, North and Latin America, I applied for PR as self-employed back in 2009. In 2008 I did a exploratory visit (recommended by the consulate at the time).
My application; according to a communication from the embassy had to be processed past december 2011.
In an unofficial contact with some embassy employees, I was told that mu application must take one or two years more to be processed.
I´ve written some communications to the embassy and I only got an answer once, telling basically, to do not bother them and shut up, obviously, in other words.
I find this kind of treatment quite disappointing from a country I used to respect.
