Subject: Proof needed that parents were Candian citizens |

I was born in the States to Canadian parents in the 1970s. I´m trying to get my Canadian citizenship certificate but it requires proof that my parents were Canadian citizens. Unfortunately we´ve been estranged for several decades and I wouldn´t even know how to find them. I know both of their birth dates, the city they were both born in Canada, when and where in Canada they were married, etc. I can´t find any documents issued by Ontario (where they were born and married) for them that I can legally obtain.
My Michigan birth certificate lists both of them and lists them as being born in Canada but I don´t think this is enough proof as to their Canadian citizenship.
Is there any document I can use to prove they were citizens without tracking one of them down? I doubt either would cooperate even if I could find them. So far the best I can find is Ontario will let me get a copy of a birth certificate if one of them dies and I´m the next of kin. I can´t really wait around for one of them to die (plus that´s creepy) and hope they didn´t get remarried or have another next of kin.

(in reply to: Proof needed that parents were Candian citizens) You´re right - the Michigan birth certificate won´t be accepted as proof.
I don´t see any alternative to contacting your parents and asking for their assistance. You could initiate a search of Canada´s citizenship records to confirm your parents are citizens - but you´ll need their permission first:
