Subject: 1960's deportation
  Hi there
Back in the late 60´s in my reckless youth whilst travelling the globe I found myself stranded in Vancouver and pretty broke. I had lined up work in northern Canada but the company employing me needed me to have a landed immigrant visa. I tried to acquire this but to cut a long story short, I didnt have the necessary "points" and so was knocked back by immigration. Because of my financial status, Canadian Immigration decided to lock me up for the night and deported me back to the UK (my home country) the next morning. I had no criminal record, was not carrying drugs, had not been in any illegal activities etc, it was just that I was classified as a vagrant and as such, an undesirable. Moving forward 54 years I am now a semi retired business owner in Australia and am planing a trip back to Canada next year for a months holiday with my wife and am wondering if my previous run in with the Canadian Immigration Dept is going to affect my chances of getting back in ?
Also, I am now an Australian citizen so do we need visas?
Thanks for any suggestions anyone, Phil

Since you were deported, you´ll need an ARC (authorization to return to Canada) to come back as a visitor. Don´t try returning until you have an approved ARC. More info here:

CBSA has refused entry to an old lady (75+) for an offence that happened 57 years ago. (caught with pot when she was 18)

So don´t hold your breath that just because it happened back in 1960, that you won´t have any issues. You should contact the Canadian Embassy prior to your trip to Canada.

Pervasive mentality (in reply to: 1960's deportation)
After one year past, people who owe money think that debt is gone and not to be remembered. The same formula seems to apply here.

what he is saying is that the time lapse from deportation to now makes no difference to what needs to happen before you are allowed back in the country. There is no automatic forgiveness.

"Forgiveness" lol, Hi Sharon, not quite sure why I need forgiveness, did I sin.
I am quite happy to pay back the air fare if that´s what it takes but I really can´t be bothered to get involved in a long protracted to-ing and fro-ing of bureaucratic form filling with the Canadian immigration Dept., it´s just not worth it.(and I am sure they would have better things to be doing to) We are hiring a motor home in Seattle for a couple of months touring of North America and I will see what the guys have to say at border control on the US Canada border, it will either be a yes or a no, if the later , then we just continue our holiday south of the border, there is some equally beautiful scenery on that side of the fence, although I did want to go and kayak with the Orca in Nootka Sound, BC but I guess that experience can be had in other countries too.
Thanks for all comments
Phil

you got your answer in the second post. If that is too much effort, then I guess you will need to contemplate that alternate route.
