Subject: Question for DocD et al
Issue: My dad´s got a multiple entry visitor visa valid until Nov. 30 2012. He intends to come over for two weeks in December but due to backlog issues, it´s kind of too late to put in an application in my home country for a renewal at this time.

Question: Is it true that the expiration date of the visa is only a date before or by which he must travel to Canada and that the entry office will (subject to his discretion) then grant visitor status with a stamp and a date by which he must leave?

Does this mean that notwithstanding the fact that his visa expires on Nov. 30, he can potentially fly in on Nov. 28 and leave on Dec. 13?

This whole visitor visa thing is so confusing for some of us who are used to the European visitor visa system.

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this.

The expiry date on your visa means that you have to travel to Canada before that date. It has nothing to do with how long you can stay in the country.

A visitor can be admitted for 6 months in most cases max.
The officer can cut that time shorter based on your return ticket. Let´s say you declare that you are staying for only two months and that is what your return ticket says, the officer can give you a max of 2 months a few extra days in case there is a delay on your flight.

Flying the day before your visa expire is a bit risky. If there is a delay in your flight and you arrive pass your expiry day, your travel document is no longer valid.
In some cases, the airlines won´t even let you board the aircraft if you are really close to your expiry date.

One more thing, make sure that the expiry date in the passport is no less than 6 months away.
